MANUAL SENS.!!!!!!!

I can not run on locked manual sens. It sounds like I am detecting an aluminum can factory. As soon as I select auto Sens.,lines flashing around the Sens. number, it clears up and I seem to get good depth. Everyone else seems to use Manual Sens., Am I doing something wrong?

What setting is your sensitivity? I usually cant run stable over 26 manual here with the 10 inch or larger coils.. also make sure your coil cable connections are tight and that you do a noise cancel

I too have had a problem with excessive nulling in manual as well as eratic sounds. This sometimes happens even if I drop sensitivity down to 8! I am running with iron mask -9, fast+deep, ferrous sounds, gain 8.
I also was having trouble operating with semiauto over 12-16, but I just got a W.O.T., and am able to run semiauto up to the low 20's, but still am having trouble with manual.
Also, when I boot up, it shows 22December99 (even though the detector was purchased Dec 2000). Does this mean anything?

That you are trying to sweep it too fast if you can not keep a threshold in Auto 12-16.I run mine in garbage piles (well, pretty trashy ground) in 32 auto and keep a threshold. You can swing fast and have a complete null and find deep stuff, but you will miss alot.Try slowing your sweep speed down till you keep a threshold.I am sure you will be able to in auto, even up to 32.
Now there are exceptions to this.If you are hunting just one area that is doing it,then it is probably full of slag fill.I hunted a park like that in Indianapolis. It sucked! <IMG SRC="/forums/images/frown.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":(">
Try slowing way down and see if that helps any.Alot of newer Explorer owners switch over from fast sweep detectors and they are so used to the faster swing that it is not even a consideration that it can cause the problem.
Also,IMO,gain 8 is too high,it will amplify any of the little trash signals and is very noisy.I know alot of guys that hunt in 10 gain and do great, but they have had theirs since they came out and know the signals inside and out.I like to run in 5 or 6 gain.I love the nice deep soft sounds on a deepie, and high gain is just too noisy for me.I can do it,but it gets annoying.
As far as your software being dated 99.There was one software upgrade in 2000 when they started using a different manufactors lcd display. The newer software is no different than the 99 software.Yours is just old stock before the newer software.Have no fear, your warranty is the same and you are not missing out on anything. The only difference is the color of the backlight. You might have the older housing that is prone to cracking, but that will be replaced if your cracks get bad enough to send it in.

Any Sens. setting that is locked sounds like detecting aluminum cans. As soon as I go to automatic it clears up and I get deep targets.Yesterday I dug 26 wheaties, 14 Indians, 1 1882 Canada Big Penny and 1 Merc. from 6 to 10 inches. Did not dig one Memorial. I run the Audio boost for deep targets at 5, so they are a little quieter than high stuff.

Speed does not seem to be my problem as I can stop the coil and hold it up in the air and it still sounds off. As soon as I go to automatic it claars up. I run on Threshold 5 so I do not hear the background tone.

I am running Man Sens at 28, gain at 7or8 with stock coil. I like to have the threshold at just audible. To cut down on noise,I go to advanced edit and run the medium curser across the entire bottom of the screen, you should still get a nickel. This will desc. out most aluminum foil, etc. HH Ken

Thanks Ric for all your help. My problem happens at most of old homesites I go to. I have tried to slow the sweep speed. What happens is that I have to hold the detector still for 1-2 seconds to get the threshold hum back. But as soon as I even begin to sweep -- even slow-- the hum gets nulled out.

There are some areas that just won't alow you to use manual. I've run into several. I went to one town that I couldn't get it stable anywhere within a 3 mile radius no mater what the setting. Never did figure that one out. You might try taking it to a differnt local. If it still does it you may have a bad coil or coil wire.
