That you are trying to sweep it too fast if you can not keep a threshold in Auto 12-16.I run mine in garbage piles (well, pretty trashy ground) in 32 auto and keep a threshold. You can swing fast and have a complete null and find deep stuff, but you will miss alot.Try slowing your sweep speed down till you keep a threshold.I am sure you will be able to in auto, even up to 32.
Now there are exceptions to this.If you are hunting just one area that is doing it,then it is probably full of slag fill.I hunted a park like that in Indianapolis. It sucked! <IMG SRC="/forums/images/frown.gif" BORDER=0 ALT="

Try slowing way down and see if that helps any.Alot of newer Explorer owners switch over from fast sweep detectors and they are so used to the faster swing that it is not even a consideration that it can cause the problem.
Also,IMO,gain 8 is too high,it will amplify any of the little trash signals and is very noisy.I know alot of guys that hunt in 10 gain and do great, but they have had theirs since they came out and know the signals inside and out.I like to run in 5 or 6 gain.I love the nice deep soft sounds on a deepie, and high gain is just too noisy for me.I can do it,but it gets annoying.
As far as your software being dated 99.There was one software upgrade in 2000 when they started using a different manufactors lcd display. The newer software is no different than the 99 software.Yours is just old stock before the newer software.Have no fear, your warranty is the same and you are not missing out on anything. The only difference is the color of the backlight. You might have the older housing that is prone to cracking, but that will be replaced if your cracks get bad enough to send it in.
