.... that the joule protection rating of any surge protector gets "used up" and diminishes in protection the older it gets. Surge protectors need to be replaced every 2 or 3 years .... otherwise thay are not much more useful than a multi outlet strip.

When you buy a surge protector, the higher the joule rating, the better the protection you are receiving. Cheap surge protectors have lower joule rating than more expensive ones .... you get what you pay for.
 
.... rely on your surge protector against strikes a bit further away, when you are away. JMHO.
