I saw three high speed photos of Elmer Kieth in a gun mag years ago taken as he shot a .50 Cal. Machine Gun chambered bolt action rifle.
He was a masochistic, pint sized shooter that had a "thing" for big guns!!
In the first picture taken when he touched off the shot he is standing upright and leaning into the stock a little.
The second picture showed the rifle's fore-stock lifted maybe six inches off his hand and his body starting to move back past the upright position.
The third shot showed the barrel pointing straight up and him on one leg with the other way off the ground as he staggered back!
His comment was about how it was a great gun!
As I recall he didn't shoot it often in a day for the article.
Modern engineering has tamed this beast of a caliber and snipers use it for amazing shots over un-believable ranges,
