Man Guilty in Artifacts Theft...

....and we wonder why we keep losing access and permission to public and private lands.
This is a reprint from today's edition of the Atlanta Journal Contstitution. I love digging relics as much as the next guy, but this was a stupid stupid move.

"A Catoosa County man pleaded guilty Wednesday to taking Civil War memorabilia from the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park in northwest Georgia.

U.S. Attorney David Nahmias said Terry S. Crawford admitted removing and damaging archaeological resources on public lands and removing items having commercial and archaeological value.

Crawford, 46, could receive up to two years in prison and a $20,000 fine when sentenced Oct. 7 by U.S. District Judge Harold Murphy of Rome.

Nahmias said Crawford and his co-defendant, 22-year-old Samuel Clay of Chattanooga, told a park ranger that they had been digging up bullets and other memorabilia."

I live in Catoosa County and these have to be some of the dumbest people. It is people like this that make it hard on everyone down here that does Civil War preservation. I hope they get the most the law allows and sets the example for everyone else.
