Malfunction with GT-AX 550

Today when I turned on my 550 the panel went berserk. I tried new batteries, but still the problem was not resolved. I tried resetting the unit holding the power button 10 seconds. At the lower panel it reads A B and pinpoint. The bars on the upper and lower side kept moving like movie marque lights while holding the pinpoint button. I tried to call Garrett but closed til Monday. Twas a beautiful day for hunting then........ Bam. Has this happened to any of y'all.

Hey Gus, I recently got my 550 back from Garrett (pinpoint button repaired), and when I got it back it was acting up like yours. I held the power button down for about 10 seconds to reset it, but it didn't fix it. I called Garrett and they told me to press the power button until I heard two beeps. I took a bit longer than ten seconds, but the problem was gone. Hope this helps, happy hunting.

Thank you Johnny for your assist. I held down the power button on the touch pad as you described until my thumb hurt. I thought, for a second, I was home free, or out hunting again. The screen cleared, then came the wanted second beep, the problem still exists. I think the touch pad is the problem. Thank you so much for your assist.

How long have you had the machine? Is the touchpad showing wear? It should only take 10 -15 seconds to get the machine reset. Sounds like you may need to send it it to get it fixed. Garrett has great service, they'll help you out.

I have had my 550 for a little over a year. I have used it often. I am going to call Garrett on Monday and send the unit to them. Once repaired I believe I will use the pinpoint less often. Again thank you for your assist.

Thank all of you for the help and support. Monday I called Garrett. The tech help guy said it could be the coil or the unit. So my GTAx 550 is taking an all expense paid vacation to Garland, TX. I miss it, so today it's checking my old plat maps and Google Earth for new destinations. I will load up the ol' dog and my Garmin 60csx to explore new destinations to hunt.

I just received a call from Garrett. The touch pad and search coil were both at fault on my GTAx 550. Garrett received my detector on Thursday and it's on is way back today, Monday. What fantastic service.

It sounds like the same sort of problem I had, but they installed a new touchpad and now it works great! I actually made my best find ever, the first time I tried it out after getting it back from the repair department. Good luck.

I have to tell you Johnny I do miss my detector. Today in the Chicago area it's a lovely day. To cold for fishing in the water, just back, not even a nibble. Tis the season for dirt fishing.
