Hey folks. I've got a Makro Racer 2 pro package on the way. I know it comes with the 11" x 7" coil and the 5" DD coil but I've read there are other coil options that might work better in some situations.
Okay, my first thought, or suggestion, is to hold off buying another search coil until you get comfortable with the standard 7X11 DD and the 5" DD. The 5" DD measures about 5½" across the bottom including the coil cover, but it's closer to 5¼" across the center axis w/o the coil cover. The 'original' Racer Pro Pack came with the
'OOR' coil
(I called it that because of the Out-Of-Round shape of about 4.7X5.2 inches) that is similar to the smaller coil on the Nokta FORS CoRe. I really like this coil and the field performance I get from it.
The
'OOR' coil, like others for the original Racer, can be swapped back-and-forth with the coils for the Racer 2. The Racer 2 Pro Pack comes with the 5¼" accessory DD coil and while I like the looks and feel of the
'OOR' coil, I have had slightly better success in a very tough iron nail challenge with the 5¼" than I got from the
'OOR' coil on the 14 kHz Makro Racer 2. Remember, it isn't always the search coil, or the size, shape and type, that makes a difference. It can often be the detector a coil is attached to.
That said, and having used the Snake and Sharp and a couple of other coils on the Racer and Racer 2, and also having had
slightly better results in a couple of iron nail challenged sites with the 5¼"
(they call it 5") DD coil, my favorite coil on the Racer series is the same size as my favorite coil on my Nokta FORS CoRe for trash, the 4.7X5.2
'OOR' shaped DD.

So I was considering adding one of the following 3: The Cors Shrew 6.5" x 3.5". The NEL 9.5" x 5.5" DD Sharpshooter. The Makro RC24 DD Coil 24 cm x 13 cm (9.5"x5").
The CORS Shrew and NEL Snake are essentially the same coil. I know Oregon Gregg likes to use this coil on his Racer 2. Personally, I am just fine with the
'OOR' or 5¼" round DD coils and have little use for the Shrew/Snake coils. They work, but so do my two Makro small coils.
The NEL Sharpshooter is an open-frame design and the Makro RC24 is also, and it is their newest coil for these models. I have the closed coil design 5½X10 Concentric on one of my FORS Relic units, but the new IM24 open-frame 5X9½ DD on my production Impact. I have a brand new but ear-broken 5½X10 DD on my Gold + that I plan to replace with the new 5X9½ DD open-frame for my Relic. I really like that coil on the impact and want one for my Relic series. I think if I was to add an open-frame type coil to my Makro Racer series, it would be the Nokta/Makro 5X9½ DD.

I've read these are better performers regarding BOTH separation and depth than the coils that come with the unit. What advice might some of you folks who have used any of these coils be able to offer?
Well, I already shared my advice, and the first thing to do is use what you have as much as you can to learn it well. It just might satisfy your wants and needs. Then, if you think something a different size or shape might work, give it a try.
I know some people get those after-market coils simple do to it being a 'fashionable trend' and the coil doesn't really do much for their type of hunting that a detector-maker's coil couldn't do. For some, however, certain coils do perform better. I know several people, like Oregon Gregg, who are just attached to some after-market coils as their detectors are. And when they get good results afield, who can fault them?
