Make your own balanced shaft for your Excalibur its easy cheap and works great. If you havent got access to a welder use a handle from a Sovereign Gt or minelab Sd and simply bolt it on.The measurements are in metric but easily converted to inches heres how you do it. seeya Neilo

I just took off my hip mount today and went for a balanced shaft, Your measurements for the lower part of the shaft up to the handgrip were right on to what I already had for the hipmount, I extended the top part where the ML Mounts a few more inches and im ready to hit the beach and try it out. I just felt kinda wired up with the hip mount. like the freedom of the stright shaft.

Hi Normdiver see how you go it might be a little bit light on the coil in the water, with the controls so far back. You will probably need to use the arm strap on the arm rest to help you if it is.I have an arm strap on my arm rest, it helps keep the detector steady especially if there are any waves.I have also put a small elastic cord which attatches to my belt, this allows me to let go of the detector all together and not have is suspended by and put load on the headphone cable. good hunting seeya Neilo:ausflag:

Had rain last nite and was unable to try it out, heading for low tide today, if the coil is too light ill revamp it like you have it. I pulled photos of all the shafts I could find from ones from companys to the homemade ones, and looked and figured and built. I feel that I can always cut it down some instead of add too, havnt tried welding aluminum yet but it wont be long, gonna order the kit that goes on my mig machine.

Tried it out last nite, works great, but now its a little long to fit in the bed of my GMC Canyon 4 cyl crewcab, golly, sounds like I need to go back to a long bed 8 cyl Silverado again, NOT, ill make it fit, its just tight with 3 detectors and 3 scoops and booties in there, need to rearrange.

Normdiver I am glad you are happy with it,if you can fit a short elastic cord to it,it makes life easier in that you can let go of the detector altogether and have it in easy reach without having it suspended by the headphone lead.It is certainly better than hip mounting thats for sure. The handle is 15cm of the same tubing welded in place, the other option is to use a handle from a S D or sovereign straight shaft which simply bolts on.I dont know where your aluminium tubing dealers are in your area. The tubing size in inches is 7/8 externally 5/8 internally. good hunting seeya Neilo:ausflag:

Put a piece of electrical tape at the top of your straight shaft and tape the wire where it bends into the control box (Tape the wire to your Straight shaft). This will take some stress off the wire and keep it from moving and getting worn at the bend.

Go to a bike shop, they have bike extension handels that fit over 7/8 aluminum and tighten up with a setscrew. see photos
