Make a land MD sealed or buy a used underwater MD?

Most in here probably live close to the ocean or have lots of freshwater lakes w/beaches in their area. I can see you guys spending $500 or more for a good underwater MD. But for me I don't have that. Everyone one says buy a good one or don't buy one. Well, there is only one lake with a beach in my area(25mile radius) that I can hunt, and its only about 75-100 yds long. So I can not justify spending $500 and only have 75-100yds of beach to search. That would be like buying a big bass boat and putting it on a 10 acre pond.

So whats a good model to look for in a used underwater MD for $200 or less. If there isn't any, then maybe I'll go to plan B and buy a cheap land MD on ebay like a US made bounty hunter quicksilver, 101, or 202 and try to waterproof it. Those been sellin from $40-80. To do that I would make a battery compartment outside the control box so I wouldn't have to keep getting into it to change the batteries. Then seal the H??? out of the Control box and around the jacks. The quick silver would probably be my pick since it has no knobs, just touch pads for adjustments. That way I could still adjust it after its sealed. And if that didn't work, then I'll just have to be satisfied with land hunting my Ace250.

Only 1 100yd beach in 25 miles, thats a lot of people for a small beach and lots of losses in a small area. My most productive beach is only about 100yds long, between 2 stone piers, well sheltered from wind and weather. Try the Ace 250, you should do ok, and get an idea of its potential, nothing says you must go into the water and it being fresh you ccan get right to the waters edge. As to a water machine less than $200 forget it and save your money, put your clad finds in a jar and wait till you have at least double that, then decide.
Waterproofing a land detector is very rarely successful and to do it right would cost more than the $200

Already search the beach and up to 1-1/2ft of water 6-7 times in the last month with my Ace 250 and no rings, just clad coins. I talked to a lifeguard and he said he has never seen anyone with a underwater MD, but has seen reg MD users on the beach and wading. So Others are searching the beach too. So I figured the deeper water might be good.

So what you are saying is there is no Good used US made UW MD's out there for $200 or less. Well, I'll keep searching the estate auctions and hopefully I will find one. Thats a great place to look for used MD's in your area.

Below is a link to search for Estate Auction with MD's in them. Auctionzip.com does not list every Auction, but it does allot of them. I can search all over the USA for auctions with MD in them, or I can search just a 30 mile radius. Its a good place to find used MD's or anything you are looking for that used and for sale at a estate auction.

I bought my first MD last winter for $5, it was a Garrett Ace 300 in A-1 condtion. I used it for a few weeks this year then bought a new Ace 250. Then I sold the Ace 300 on ebay for over $125 and used that to help buy my Ace 250. I also bought a Fisher M-80 for $3 at another auction, but found out later on its not a good one to use since it so old. But it does work.

Here is that link, its allready set up to search any miles from zip code 90740. Put in your zip code, set the miles you want and click search. If none in June, click the arrow to search July...Most I see are from the midwest, not the coast.

Good luck.

Sell the Ace 250 or keep it for your buddies to use.
It sounds like you are ready for a better detector.

Buy or trade for a Tesoro Tiger Shark, a White's Beach Hunter ID 300, or a Fisher CZ-20.
You can use any of these detectors for land or water.
Buy a good water scoop.
