Major General G. B. McClellan War of 1861 dog tag

Got out for a very quick hunt yesterday and pulled this very cool old medal .

This will rate as one of my best finds ever. They refer to it as a Major General G. B. McClellan War of 1861 dog tag.

I guess it was used for his presidential campaign in 1864.

Not sure on how rare but any thing civil war area and presidential is a great combination.

Thanks for looking

Just a quick note of follow-up on the McClellan disc. I discussed it with Georg, a professional appraiser of Civil War militaria and antiques, and our best guess is that, as a blank reverse example in dug condition, it might retail around $200.

A real piece of history - congrats !

Great find!
The war was going bad for Lincoln as the North lost every major battle in the Eastern theater. It was looking doubtful for Lincoln's re-election as anti-war sentiment started to grow in the North.
So McClellan jumped into the Presidential race with the idea of ending the war. The reversal started with Lee's defeat at Gettysburg, then the fall of Vicksburg but later on Sherman's successful Georgia campaign was one of the final nails in the Confederacy's coffin which led to Lincoln's re-election. Finally Grant's seige on Petersburg leading to the capture of Richmond basically ended the war.
The rest is history.

I love the history thank you so much.

Its funny finding a piece of history and reading up on what might be over looked otherwise.
They should supply metal detectors to history teachers in school and let the students unearth history and research finds what a great way to learn.

This is the best I can do getting this cleaned up without destroying its dug out beauty
