Maiden voyage with the Musky Advantage

I purchased a used Musky Advantage about a week ago, and never used one before. I wanted to try one out since I read they are deep and easy to use. Since there are a few beach applications I want to use it for, I also purchased a WOT coil for it.

I took it to a the beach today...first time using it. Reading posts of the forums, some did state it can run well in the dry sand, but the wet would be a challenge. Needless to say, it was. I could not ground balance it, so I just kept the GB knob in the middle ( I did not run it in fixed mode). Swinging the big coil caused falsing and chatter almost constantly in some spots ...but heres the good thing. Every target was identifiable through the falsing. I could tell the targets from the ground noise and salt conductivity. They made a totally different sound, and if it was hard to tell, a few fast , short, sweeps with the coil let me know whether to dig of move on. I also found if I slowed down a bit swinging, and kept the coil even and a little off the wet sand, the chatter died down. But, I may have lost a few inches in depth since the coil was 3-4 inches over the sand and I like to have my coil as close as I can to the ground.

Running with the discriminate knob at about 10 o'clock, I did not dig any small iron, and there was tons of it. I had my sensitivity at about 2 o'clock.

Now, I know I missed a few targets because I went back over some spots with my CZ6a and the 8 inch coil and found a few pennies and sinkers, but then again, there were LOTS of targets on this beach today. I may have missed them since I still need to learn this machine.

I can't wait to take the Musky with this big coil to a beach I hunted in the Summer looking for big silver. If some of you saw my post back in the Fall, you know what I am looking for using this set up.

The silver ring in the picture hit hard and it was deep...a very good sign. The Indian Head is the most beat up, thin IH I have ever found. The 25 Cent coin is Trinidad and Tobago coin...no idea how the heck that got on that beach.

Anyway, I am very happy with the Musky. When I bought it, it came with the 10 inch coil. I want to get a smaller coil, and really would like the Excelerator but I don't think there are any available. If some one can let me know if the standard 8 inch slimline is similar or better than the Excelerator, then I am going for that one. If not, then I will have to look for a used Excelerator.

I know the Musky is really not a beach machine, but I think it did darn well today.
