maiden hunt with new Etrac - only 20 minutes, scored a coin though!

Well my new Etrac from Bart at Big Boy Hobbies didn't get to my house til almost 8pm thanks to UPS making me one of their last stops of the day! I just ordered it late Monday afternoon so I was pleasantly surprised it even got here tonight. Thanks to Bart for boxing it up so quickly and getting it out Monday. I put it together real quick, battery had about 1/2 life so I grabbed it and went into my side yard right outside my backporch where I've swung a Bounty Hunter Tracker IV, Ace 250 and most recently Whites DFX. It was 10pm when I started. I had already pulled a couple wheats from that area with the DFX (one at 9" with the 8x6 SEF). I just ran in stock Coin program with Auto +3. I got a strong penny signal at about 6" on the Etrac about 15 minutes into swinging so I ran back in the house to get my digger and Centech. Dug a little and out popped a 1939 wheat penny right at 6". I have no doubt that the DFX would have picked this up but as I swung the Etrac back over the area I got nulling from nearby iron, very nearby. I think the DFX might have struggled a little in the response. I'm excited to charge the battery and hopefully get out to the park a little on Friday or Saturday. I'm definitely staying in cleaner areas for now. I didn't realize how much iron I have in the tiny section I hunted tonight. Also, I love the QuickMask feature. It's very handy.

Nice.....time to find some more!

Happy hunting with the new machine. At least you were able to use yours right away, It was 2 months before I could dig....sadly all I could do was swing and listen! Thanks for the story and the picture.

Welcome to the E-Trac world and congrats on getting an oldie right off the bat. It's your first of many oldies that will find their way into your pouch! Don't be afraid to wander into the trashier parts of your parks. Just take it slow and low and the E-Trac will sniff out the oldies hiding in the trash and iron. Dig lots of targets so you can start to learn the E-Trac language.

All those new tones will start to make sense once you get some hours on your machine. I swear your silver count is going to go through the roof. Be patient and most of all have lots of fun! I smell lots of silver coming your way

Thanks fellas.
Terry, I'm up in Youngstown. Unfortunately I'm going to be losing access to my huge 1890's park in 2 months when it will be joining the National Reserve. I'm going to have to start doing some private property I think. I finally mustered the courage a couple weekends ago to knock on a door for the first time... but no one was home!! Plus the field is starting to grow so I'll probably have to wait. The fact that I'm going to have to do private propert soon is one of the main reasons I bought the Etrac. I don't want to hit it with one machine and en up knocking on the same door again next year if I upgrade. People around here may not let you back twice.

Randy, thanks again for the incredible wealth of knowledge and advice you PM'd. I will be referring to that often as I learn the Etrac.

The nice thing about the Etrac is that you can hit heavily detected areas and usually still find great stuff. I went to a park last week and there were 3 other people detecting at the time. They were a father-son-son combo and told me the area I was working had been covered by them, and I would not have much luck. I explained I was just learning my machine and wanted to dig junk for experience. After pulling a 1906 IH about 8in deep, I felt very optimistic that wherever I go, I have the tool to be successful. I also ordered my rig from Bart, and he is a great vendor with amazing service. I received my Etrac 22 HOURS after ordering!!!

Good luck with your new machine !
