Magnet experience

I'm thinking of adding a magnet to my arsenal for pulling artifacts out of streams. The choices online are mind boggling and I'm not sure what to buy. I'd appreciate hearing of the experiences of others who have used them.
Thanks and HH!

We used to use old stereo speaker magnets and attached a rope to them.
But beware of the sunken cars.

Harbor freight has a couple of big magnets that you can tie a rope to. They can lift some heavy stuff and really cheap too.

hello if the magnet is very strong you can have a problems to disconnect of a large steel piece

One cool trick that may help is to put the magnet in an old sock or something similar, that way, all the fine iron particles wont gum it up so fast...you just pull off the sock from time to time, instead of trying to get all those little filings off the magnet.. Let us know how you do...theres a few youtube vids of 'magnet fishing' out there...some of those guys pull up shopping carts and bicycles!

Thanks Yannick! That's not quite what I had in mind but was informative. Aquachigger has one I think on the end of his digging tool for pulling out guns, cannon balls etc. I'm thinking maybe 20 lb pull???
