Made it to my goal today!

Mason Jarr

I started this year with a goal of 50 pieces of silver and 200 Wheat cents. A few weeks ago, I got to my goal with the cents. I've been looking at this great older house in my town and knew it would probably have a few goodies, but I never could catch the owner when he was home. Yesterday I finally saw a truck there and stopped to knock on the door. He was a great guy and told me to go ahead and hunt all I wanted to. So this morning I went there around 9:00 before it started getting too hot. I had 47 silver coins when I began. After carefully gridding the medium sized yard, I ended up pulling exactly three silvers from there. So I made my goal of 50. I hope I'll get a few more this season, but I don't really have a new goal. I have some other interests that start kicking in around mid-September and keep me busy through the late winter, so my metal detecting time will get less...even though our ground is huntable into December most years. I sure feel satisfied with these 50 coins. This is my second full year of detecting and the first year I've found any silver. I used an E-trac for most of these finds, but upgraded to a CTX a couple of months ago (but I still have the E-trac and use it from time to time). I also picked up a bonus 25S buffalo and some more Wheats. My goal for the rest of this year is to try for a Standing Liberty quarter and/or my first Indian Head cent. Not that hard for some locales, but around my sites they're pretty hard to come by. Here's some pics:

The buffalo. That scratch was not from me!

Thanks for looking and I hope you were successful if you got out today! Man, this heat is making it tough.

Mason,

Congrats on hitting your goal! Silver is always awesome!

Awesome! That always a great feeling! I had a goal of 50 last year and made it to 60. This year I'm nowhere near the number silver I wish I was finding. My hunting partner brother-in-law has had a tough summer health-wise so we haven't done anything near what we did last summer. I'm headed up his way next weekend.

I know what you mean hunting seasons coming real fast have to get ready for elk season first then deer . Great finds the nickel is a good one , the S mints are hard to come by.

Thanks. Yes, hunting season cometh. I have an archery antelope tag that starts on Sep 10th and I drew an archery elk tag in Montana with a buddy that lives there. Have to be there in mid-September and then back to Idaho for our elk season, then deer in October. I'm also a trapper and run a longline for coyotes and bobcats, so I live out of a camper for most of November, December and January. After cat season closes, I trap on the river for muskrat, beaver, mink and otter. By the time that's all done, it'll be MDing time again.

What a great hunt! Congratulations! I hear ya on those older coins. I still haven't put the coil over an SLQ. All my hunting buddies like to dig them up in front of me though... So that's awesome. Seriously considering hunting alon until I reach some goals.

Thanks. I hear ya! I was hunting a large area with a buddy until about a week ago when we pretty much finished it off. I'll go back there from time to time because I'm sure we missed a few, but it'll be an all day grind from now on. I went back to door knocking and yard hunting and most of the yards I get into are pretty small or medium, at best. It's pretty much a solo enterprise. My buddy seems a little put out about it, but it's usually me who does the knocking. I told him to find us another large location and we'll hunt it. I'm looking for one as well. Until then, I'm back to being the lone ranger. I'm not greedy. I just can't find enough good yards to support two MDers.
