Went out today to hunt my favorite athletic field. Five minutes into the hunt a guy pulls up in a big truck and after a few pleasantries, asked me if I'd be willing to look for his lost gold wedding band. He offered to pay me. I hesitated a second, because I've gone through this before, where a person thinks they know where a ring was lost, but in reality, it was somewherre else. I've also found several rings for poeple, as well, so I said OK. So I followed him out to his house. It was in the country and a big newer home. I was hoping for an old, large farm house where I could hunt the yard. Anyway, he showed me where he had parked and where he thought the ring might be, along side his gravel driveway. Being a new home, with obvious fill durt brought in, the ground was pretty clean. I started out and got a 75 VDI # and saw a dime in the gravel. Went a few more feet and got another dime. Then I got a 54 VDI # and scraped out a zinc penny. A few more feet I got a 48 VDI # with a really nice, narrow bell curve in the analyse mode. Out popped a prettty gold wedding band. Right next to it was another zinc penny. The ring wasn't marked, but he said it was 10K gold. I was surprised it read so high. Gives me an idea on numbers to check in the future. He asked how much he owed me and I said "Nothing. Glad I could be of help." We started out talking about "treasue hunting" and gold, old sites. He digs wells for a living and said he gets into some pretty old house situations. He took my phone number and said he would call me if something looked promising. When you go detecting, you never know what the day will bring. I started out hoping for a few coins and maybe a ring, only to find a new friend who can potentially get me into some spots I never would have been able to get into. Man, I love this hobby.
