M6 coils for a beginner

ToniSteve

New member
Hello,
My daughter asked me a few weeks ago if she could get a metal detector. She is 14. We have done our research and have talked to a few quite knowledgeable folks. We decided on an M6 with our sights on a Vision as soon as we are used to detecting in general. We will be detecting around old houses, buildings, fields and maybe 20% of the time at fresh and saltwater beaches and swimming holes.

Here is what we plan on ordering:
M6
5.3 eclipse coil
headphones

Here is the question.

Do you think this covers most of the bases?
Much appreciation in advance!

Kind Regards,
Steve & Toni

Well, you hit the nail on the head for what I'd have suggested. The 4X6 shooter coil is a bit better in really heavy trash, but the 5.3 will do you a good job and covers a bit more area and is deeper. Several of us use the 5.3 as one of our main coils with very good results. Good luck and happy digging,
BB

Yep, you got it covered. You probably will keep the 5.3 on all the time!!!!

What he said.....Enjoy!

If you want an all around coil then the White's 6x10 DD coil would be the ticket and it gets better ground coverage than a small coil and it does resonably well in trashy areas. If she is only going to hunt trashy areas like play grounds and tot lots a smaller coil like the 5.3 coil would be the choice. JMHO Dennis in Idaho

I have a Whites M6 and an Excellerator 6" DD coil. I also have a 10 X 12 SEF coil and have found a lot with the 2 coils. The M6 is a very good detector and is great for someone just starting. Perfect beginning for someone wanting an excellent detector that is very easy to learn. The seven tones can be very informative so don't overlook that option.

Welocme to the hobby, and especially welcome to White's and this forum.

Keep my phone number handy and let me know when you've got a good starting grasp on the M6 and want to get toghether.

Remember, next to having a good "how to" knowledge of your detector and detecting, and selecting the best coil for the task at hand, LOCATION is the key to success.

Yep, a very good selection. Especially the 5.3 Eclipse coil. This will most likely be the primary-use coil you're going to own. The stock 950 is 'OK' for open area searches and such, especially is the target count is low. If you consider any larger coil to compliment the 5.3 Eclipse for beaches and open sites, I'd strongly suggest the White's `10" D[sub]2[/sub] Double-D coil. Not only do I like this coil for working the higher mineralized grounds found in much of the NorthWest, but this is the stock coil on my Vision and the one I use in low-target sites. If you'd like to get a clean, virtually new 10" D2 coil for $135, delivered, shoot me an E-mail or give me a phone call.

I think the M6 is a top choice. I think the 5.3 Eclipse is a "must have" for any coin hunter who is, my the general nature of that title, apt to hunt a lot of trashy sites. It's my favorite small coil from White's for the M6, MXT and Vision/Spectra V3. I hope you didn't/don't go cheap on headphones. Remember, this is an investment and top quality headphones are a 'must have', in my opinion. So, yes, you have a great detector choice, a perfect 6

Hi Monte,
I am glad to hear you are OK! Thanks a bunch! I will call soon. Save that coil for Toni. I will call you tomorrow. Are the Whites $49 headphones OK? Toni is excited about her new detector and now her mom is thinking she might like one too!

Toni is also excited about spending some time with you too. We searched your name in this forum and read everything you have posted here. We certainly learned a lot from doing that. It helped us to become familiar with the nomenclature and some of the nuance involved with the machines and how to use them. We have an old homestead up here in between Granite Falls and Arlington that was handed down through the family, so Toni will have lots of practice right out the front door. I also have a manuscript history of what used to be the closest town to us, it no longer exists. It was written by the wife of one of the original homesteaders here and she goes into detail on where all the local swimming holes and gathering places were.

Thanks again for all your help!

Kind Regards,
Toni and Steve
