So it appears Allegheny county Pa hired park Rangers to take over the city and county parks...they have taken the applications for permits to detect off the website and are already kicking detctorists out of the parks some have hunted for 35 plus years unmolested,I have seen the turf damage and garbage left by unethical detctorists and that is at least partially to blame, some TV shows and a few you-tubers also are at fault here and I'm not suprised by the recent ban on our hobby that is occurring all over and in my backyard ....sad to say this but I told ya so! I'm going to do my best to fight this locally.....Mole

Its happening more and more. Some people think they can walk away and leave open holes or a poorly dug divot and not have consequences. I went one time and spent most of the day repairing the ground in a city park with open holes from someone detecting.

You can't be cutting plugs in DRY Summer conditions, it will kill the grass and damage the green.
No public property, private, or otherwise will stand for that when you leave a gopher field.
Would you do that to your own yard?
Say goodbye to detecting there. Blame your peers.

Yep! I am a few miles north of Pittsburgh, I saw it coming. Soon all schools and public property will also be off limits also, just wait it is coming.

North of Pittsburgh myself,It makes me wonder what did someone see to cause this?I will just have to frame my permission slip from Clarence J Hopson.---------afert1----------

My sons new house is over 100yrs, old. He said I can detect it but be very careful as he has real nice grass. I was very careful cutting small horseshoe plugs, using ground cloths carefully removing my treasure. Refilled the hole, hinged over the plug, firm it all down nicely. When done I could not tell that a plug has been removed.
When I came back 10 days later, Holy Crap! Brown spots all over the yard! I quit I will not ask anyone if I can detect their property again. It just can't be done without hurting the grass. From now on I'll just stay at the beach and farm fields.

All you needed to do was water the grass more than often and it would have stayed green...
I've been trying to rake clean a track for RC rally racing in an abandoned field.
The grass is growing faster than what I clean away, and especially only were I'm digging it up... :-(

As a landscaper for 30 years 24 of it working for myself I agree. You must water the plugs you cut every day during the dry season or they will die out and may not come back the roots can not take the stress. Ideally the best thing to do is water the yard thoroughly before you cut plugs then water after also if you really must detect the yard.

Yea you can water in your own neighborhood, but you can't water in all the places you been, or not even able to find them again. I've been detecting for 35 years and I know what I'm talking about.
beaches and farm fields for me. I hate it myself but that's the truth of it....

How frustrating for all of us who love this hobby, the sharing of the hunting experience with others and the finds we can save for future generations. I'm sure that many of us have seen that these bans or prohibitive measures were coming. If I have the time to stop the car for a few minutes , I do find myself watching newbies detect grass areas and if I feel that they're not doing justice on behalf of the hobby, to respect the code of ethics , I will walk over and politely offer them advice.

Wrong time of year no matter how careful you are. I've been detecting for over 45 years and will not do a lawn during the summer. I now always wait till fall.
