Lunch Hunt With The Outlaw

New member
Hey everyone! So I just spent my lunch break in the woods behind some stone walls and get a nice round sound with he outlaw. Neutral Gb, thresh @ 9:00 and sens maxed out. I was using the 12x10 DD and get this really nice but faint signal. I roll the disc to midway and still there. I crank the disc and it's still there but really, really faint. I dug at least 14" down and could not find it!! My lunch was over and had to return but will be back tomorrow. Man I was frustrated. What could it possibly have been? Big iron super deep? I really nice silver dollar? How many times has this happened to you guys and what was it in the end? I'm a solid 14" down maybe a little more. I will return tomorrow.......

Happy hunting Guys!!

In my limited experience with the Outlaw, it has ALWAYS been big iron.

But Im hoping to see a pic of a nice silver dollar from you tomorrow!

I have zero Outlaw experience. But in my metal detecting experience anything more than 10 inches deep is usually junk. I do not relic hunt. I say this because I know those that do enjoy finding an old horse shoe.

Could be a horse shoe, axe head like Gunnar found or a jar of silver dollars. Just out of curiosity, how far could you raise the 12X10 DD coil above the ground and still get a banger of a signal? I got a quart jar of clad coins buried about a foot down and can get a loud signal with the coil 2 feet above it, makes you wonder about those kind of signals.

maybe a buried cadillac.

say , put it in threshold all metal , that will give you an idea of how big it is it may be about 20" down . shure sounds like big Iron to me same thing happened to me today at the 30,s shack

Just a note.....make sure you are not responding to one of the rocks themselves. Not sure where you live but here in new England most of the rock walls are granite of some kind and depending on where the soil ground balanced at the rocks will be or have a different Gb point then the soil. If the GB point is positive enough from the soil...you will get a nice coin hit on the rocks.

One easy way to tell is to go to all metal and see how the all metal repsonds. Will usually be flunky on hot rocks....hard to describe but it won't be like it would for a deep metal target. Usually they will cause the threshold to quickly null out but not always..depends if they are positive or negative hotrocks and all that really means is relative to the GB point of your soil

When I used Tesoro's here this would happen often around walls...now not all the stones just a portion...again depends on how much different their mineral makeup is from the soil.

Or...deep iron...like an ox shoe....usually though deep iron I could always get to break up or snap a bit as I raised the disc whereas rocks just kept sounding smooth no matter where the disc was....and raising it just made it slightly softer

Just a thought, being that you were using the large 12X10 coil, could it be that your pinpointing may be a bit off. I recommend trying again with the smaller coil and or check the sidewalls of your hole with a pinpointer.

Humble, i did check with pinpointer and that was it. I didnt try another coil though i did run the idx over it and it only sounded off with very low disc so i knew it was iron. The idx is super in the iron. The outlaw has a few issues in iron infested sites with a very high sensitivity.

I have found at least a dozen horseshoes with a vaquero in a year. I figure the area has potential if old horseshoes are there.
