LTD + 6.5" Elliptical Coil + Cache Mode = killer deep seeking trash hunter ?

Anyone tried this combination ?

Sounds like it could be a deadly combination for deep coins in trash.

hh,
Brian

Before my LTD died, and I sent it back to First Texas, I ran the 5" DD and 6.5" Elliptical side by side in my test bed in CL mode. Both coils showed equal depth with the 5" showing a bit better separation in a complex iron/coin target I created, but I believe that may be due more to the 5" coil's smaller size.

In my red clay, both coils saw a 6" dime easily, both marginally saw a 7" dime and both missed a 8" dime. The soil was relatively dry and I know that, in my dirt, the ability to see the 8" dime is greatly enhanced after a rain.

The elliptical coil offers the obvious advantage of greater coverage per sweep compared to the 5" DD.

I have tried both Cal and have found they both have their place...When I hunt I try one to see if I can quite the machine down and if not the other....So far the 5DD has worked the best..Maybe at our hunt in SF we can try both..

Once the rain stopped, took the LTD with the 6.5 elliptical to the very trashy end of the school.

Switched between BP and CL. Could run the sensitivity a little higher in CL and of course needed to swing slower. Could get boost up to 58 in BP and 70 in CL without driving me batty and without lighting up the tiniest specs of foil. Did not dig things that ID bounced no higher than 15 since there is so much small foil at this location. In about 2 hours managed to wiggled out $3.56 in change, including 13 nickles, loads of pull tabs and foil pieces, two modern coat buttons and a cheap pendant. Still looking for jewelry at this end of the school. I tried varying the discrimination in CL mode up to 20. Could hear clicks on discriminated out material and the lag for recovery makes me feel there is a lot of masking when there is much of any coil movement. I was real quiet with the disc up. Dropped discrimination back to zero and Sens to 64 and listened to every thing.

Go-rebels,
How high were you running sensitivity to see the 6 inch dime? I wasn't separating things well at all deeper than 4 to 4.5 inches, but then this is a real trashy area and not a prepared test area. And this is going better than I've done with my other detectors in this area.

When I found my 6" dime in my dry red clay, I was running two different DISC settings, one at zero and one at 40. Both times I ran SENS=50 and had equal results. Running SENS >55 resulted in too much chatter for comfortable hunting.

In an earlier test of the 6.5" elliptical, when my soil was damp, I ran SENS=35 and easily detected my 8" dime using DISC=0 and DISC=40. I thought that was pretty impressive given that I got a marginal signal using my Minelab Explorer II w/Pro coil.

Jason,
Yes I need to try the 5 inch coil at that part of the school. Have not even had the 5 inch coil on the detector yet. Wanted to get a sense of the 6.5 elliptical versus what I've seen in this part of the school with the Tejon and the 5.75 concentric and the XL Pro with the 6 inch concentric. Am a bit sore from today's digging. Joints aren't what they used to be. If I can get out tomorrow it will be with the big coil over cleaner open area. Will need to try that 5 inch coil soon though.

That's VERY impressive

My F75 LTD gets here on Tuesday, I can't wait to test it out. I like the little 5" DD (actually 4.75") on my F70, only issues really are bottle caps and it feels like your painting a 747 with a Q-tip  I suspect that 6.5" coil is going to be deadly for trashy park hunting

Excellent, it should do well weeding jewelery out of the trash (unfortunately you have to pay your dues digging the tabs to get the gold :pulltab: ).

With those results I will try running lower on sensitivity. No reason to hear all the non-repeatable zip, pop, zip sounds if deep good targets respond at low sensitivity.

Raining now. May not get out. Have the rain cover but not happy with the fit and that the headphone plug is still exposed and ready to have droplets run right down the plug towards the electronics.

Check out thesaurusaccessories out of England. They make a great custom rain cover.
