LST vs. MXT

Anyone compared an Lobo Super Trac to an MXT? If so how did they stack up against each other? Maybe Monte has some input.

Visual Target ID
• LST .. No
• MXT .. Yes
Autotracking GB circuitry
• LST .. All Metal, only. Disc. mode is factory preset GB.
• MXT .. Yes
Ability to 'Lock' the GB setting
• LST .. No
• MXT .. Yes
Coin Depth Readout
• LST .. No
• MXT .. Yes
S.A.T. (Autotune) Speed Adjustment
• LST .. No
• MXT .. Yes
Then there are things they do have in common, such as:
BOTH have round and elliptical coils in concentric & widescan design available.
BOTH operate on 8-AA alkaline batteries.
BOTH have multi-pulpose capability to include gold nugget hunting.
It really would come down to what uses you might have for either model, and the type of environment you would be hunting in. Also, your patience level would be important to know because one of the two can be a bit noisey in operation.
Fill us in with a little more info about what applications you have for it and in what type of environment.

Monte,
I did not think the LST had factory pre-set GB in Disc. mode. I have one and the instruction book shows how to manual GB if using the Disc. mode. Am I understanding the instruction book correctly?

and, as the manual states, it only tracks in the All Metal mode:
<STRONG>"Once the LOBO SuperTRAQ is properly ground balanced, it tracks the mineral conditions automatically as you hunt in the All Metal Mode. <FONT COLOR="#ff0000">The automatic tracking is disabled when the detector is used in the Discriminate mode</FONT>."</STRONG>

With all due respect,
I think we each are using the word "preset" in a different way. I think of "Preset" as being factory set and operator is unable to change. I think you are just saying it is "preset"(by the operator) before starting. To me this is still manual Ground Balancing.
I re-read my manual again.
Page 22, "Tuning your Lobo SuperTraq" states:
(Referinig to Ground Balance:)
"The LOBO SuperTraq's procedure is very simple and takes only a few seconds to do. It should be done each time you use the detector, no matter which mode of operation you plan to use. The automatic tracking is disabled when the detector is used in the discriminate mode."
I think of "Preset" as meaning it is in the circuitry and I cannot change, influence, or control it in any way. Here we are being told to do the ground balance even if using the Disc. mode, but the machine will not adjust or auto track. Bottom line, we have to manual ground balance....................first.
I have never used an MXT, and they may be great nugget machines, but I doubt I would ever trade my LST for one.

<STRONG>"The LOBO SuperTraq's procedure is very simple and takes only a few seconds to do."</STRONG>... And, might I ask, which MODE do you do the ground balaning in? All Metal, of course.
<STRONG>"It should be done each time you use the detector, no matter which mode of operation you plan to use."</STRONG>... Why? Because even if you are HUNTING in the Disc. mode, you want to be able to have good performance when you go into the All Metal PINPOINT mode, and that means the All Metal mode should be ground balanced.
<STRONG>"The automatic tracking is disabled when the detector is used in the discriminate mode."</STRONG>.... That is correct. You Ground Balance by going into the All Metal mode and <EM>MANUALLY MANIPULATE</EM> the detector's coil up and down (pump it) or sweep it side-to-side to allow it to autotrack and establish the starting GB, for that mode. It HAS to be for that mode because... <EM><STRONG><FONT COLOR="#ff0000">"The automatic tracking is disabled when the detector is used in the discriminate mode."</FONT></STRONG></EM>
<STRONG>"I think of "Preset" as meaning it is in the circuitry and I cannot change, influence, or control it in any way."</STRONG>.... Quite correct, and that IS the case with the Lobo SuperTRAQ.
<STRONG>"Here we are being told to do the ground balance even if using the Disc. mode, but the machine will not adjust or auto track. Bottom line, we have to manual ground balance....................first."</STRONG>... Right, and you do that in the ALL METAL mode for the reasons I stated above.
Trust me, this is an old, old topic. There is a fellow down on some island off of Florida who did a modification to his LST and added a manual GB knob just for the Discriminate mode.
I had a Lobo ST I bought brand new and it falsed miserable at the minimum doscriminate setting. What did it false and response when the coil was lifted away from the gropund or swept over a hole? because the GB was too negative. I was going on vacation to AZ at the time and planned on some nugget hunting so I stopped at the factory. <EM>I</EM> knew the problem and <EM>they</EM> knew the problem. Quickly, the service depatrtment took care of the <EM>INTERNAL</EM> GB TRIMMER ADJUSTMENTS and I was set to go enjoy the LST.
GB in Disc. mode = factory preset internally
GB in All Metal = handled by the Autotracking circuitry
This is also why folks might sometimes get an assortment of coils and some work just fine in the All Metal mode (thank to the autotracking) but have to send the SuperTRAQ and coils to the factory for calibration. That way the GB for the Disc. mode is set to function with all the coils.
