The manuals for the Shadow X2 do list the frequency as 10 khz, but Troy said some were made that ran at 9.6 khz. He called them "Lady Shadows". They came with a Lady Shadow sticker in the box that could be put on the housing and he said they were 9.6 khz so a husband and wife, or two hunting buddies, could hunt close to each other and not experience interference. Whether that's correct or not is open to question, but on his website the specifications for the X2, listed below, have them listed as 9.6 - 10 khz. The specs page is at http://www.troycustomdetectors.com/products/x2specs.html. Since you work for Tesoro you should know, but In any case, whether accurate or not, Troy was the source of the belief that a 9.6 khz X2 was built.
