Loving my new used SPECTRUM XLT!!!

Took this machine to a Chicago beach the other day and if there were targets in the sand
this machine had great responses. Couldn't water hunt though as the waves were powerful
that day and swimmers had to stay close to shore. Best find was a 53' wheatie . Plenty of
clad was found along with pull tabs, foil but no Gold for the day. It was a pleasure using this
machine. I found it very easy to use and to make adjustments as I found the Menus and
scrolling to be very simple. I have heard some people struggle adjusting these units or are
confused with making settings and changes.Fairly simple in my opinion as I think you just
need to be familiar with what each setting controls and what effects other settings might
have. Been researching this unit for a bit and will be plugging in some Custom Programs
to get the max. performance out of this unit. Will see how I really like it then. I'm a guy with
multiple, multiple detectors and equipment. Love detecting and using different machines.
I know learn 1 and stay with it. Been detecting 15 years and used an Expl. XS for 8 years
so I feel confident going out with most machines and they all find the goods. Some days
are just better than others. My main unit though is that machine from France and that baby
will find in the Iron what others have not attempted to even hunt. Anyway can't wait to fit in
some Custom programs and really see what the SPECTRUM is made of.One reason I bought
this unit is my buddy has used one for years and does really well with it and he has never ever
left the factory programs. So to me it just seems like a great unit. Can't wait to use the Pro-Options
on this unit to see what this machine is really capable of as I have heard the factory programs are
not deep but even so this machine bangs on coins above 5 or 6 inches. Really loving the SPECTRUM!!!

I bought a XLT when they were first introduced and used it for close to 20 years with out a breakdown. Then tried several other detectors, but came back to the XLT. I can also get 5-6 inch hits with the factory programs, and several more with some minor changes in programing. I would suggest you get a 5.3 coil as well, good separation, do not need to swing as fast, and you can run it hotter to make up for not going as deep.

Thanks for the replies you guys. I do have the 5.3 coil that I use with
my Modded IDX Pro. Also own an Eagle SL 90 that I like but the XLT
just latched on to me and I like it's performance so far. Also have the
blue max 3.50 snooper coil brand new that I will put thru the paces in
the heavy Iron. Soon I need to get back to my go to machine but am
really enjoying the XLT... Just doesn't seem as complicated as some
I know have made it out to be. That D.C. phase option seems to me
it needs some investigating on my end but I will put some time in with
this unit to see what I can pull out with her. Thanks for listening!

...The XLT was my first metal detector, bought it new in 1994, the first year they produced. I had to learn it on my own, read, read and more reading. I bought Clyde James Clyneck's book and got some good tips with it. This was 10 years before I found the internet forums.

...I made my own custom program starting with the Factory "Coin & Jewelry" program, then named it to save it, all in the manual. I added VCO to the all-metal mode, Ratchet pinpointing "OFF." I dialed in a little more Pre-Amp Gain and a little more AC and DC Sensitivity. Discrimination -40 to +95, pretty much it. I ground balanced every 30 min. You can even go into the Pro menu and manually ground balance and have a +1 off-set, if you like to play with settings like that.

...We bought my wife a Tesoro Toltec ll a year later in 1995 when they first came out, I found out that the XLT was not as good as the Toltec in the iron nails, so don't get rid of your 2 filter Tesoro or the White's IDX Pro, they shine in the trash. Have fun with it.

It's been awhile since I picked up the XLT or the book, about 15 years I would guess, take what I said for a big pinch of salt...LOL

This Spectrum just seems fun to use and I just like the feel and responses I get with this unit.
Time will tell if I will make it my #2 machine to go to... My #1 machine is that machine from
France that just SINGS in the Iron. Thanks for your input as I always enjoy learning more
about this great hobby as there is so much to learn in becoming a proficient detectorist!!!

I hear you! I broke out my XLT Spectrum with the Bigfoot coil and have been using it at the beach the last few days. I had forgotten how much fun this machine was. It's an oldie but a goodie:thumbup:

I bought an XLT about three months ago, mine is an E series. And my coild on mine isnt like the ones that i see on the rest of the XLTs,mine is built like the ones on the dfx machine 950 coils.I have a test bed that i planted years ago,and when i play with the settings it will hit an 8 inch dime in my ground and when i bought it the man said that it had only been used 2 times when he bought it new.It is in perfect shape.I have thought about trading it a few times, but have changed my mind it is so fun to play with, because they are built like a tank.I got alot of my setting off of the internet. Man dont they have the settings tho LOL!!
