Had some time on my hands today so thought I would go on a short hunt. I have dug wheaties, a large cent, camp lead and a silver wedding band all from this site in the past. Went out today to hit it again. About 15 mins. in I had 2 lincoln cents to show for my trouble. Then out of the ground came this beautiful diamond ring. At last the detector was paid off with enough money to make the better half more appreciative of my time consuming hobby. Well as you can see the ring was a bust value wise, but I did score a nice William's Cleaner. So tomorrow I have another site in mind and who knows what the next shovel full holds. It might not be riches, but just like the child in all MD'ers it never grows old.

Very nice devilantsva , Alway love finding CW lead.

Yeah, I was thinking about that kid today as I found another nickle.... it's fun for sure, even if it doesn't pay all that well.

Nice finds, and HH at the next site.

Great finds!. Good job! Can I ask, as I've read the reference to "camp lead" a few times in the past, what is that refering to? Not being in an area of civil war activity, my best guess/shot at what that means is a large block of lead that was melted down to form bullets? If that's true, then I can say I have dug one of those here in Northeast Ohio, as in the woods on a ridgetop I found a partly melted large mass of led, and wondered just the very same thing...Looks like it was melted for making bullets. A friend, however, has dug one civil war button in nice shape in my area, and I've heard of other civil war buttons being dug around here. More than likely from troops who returned home and still wore the jackets while hunting or just to keep warm. I welcome any differing or further opinions on this stuff. Again, great finds!

Not all the lead they poured ended up in the mold. So you get splatter on the ground. It can be tiny pieces or sizable pieces of lead. Here is a pic of some I found on site. Not sure what the round piece is maybe a crushed musket ball I don't know.

Aha! I see. Makes sense. The lead I found was a large blob roughly square (but with one melted end) and about the size of a half a carton of smokes, but about twice the width. It was wierd to find because it was in the middle of the woods and thus nowhere, but at the top of a ridge in a good "look out" spot. I had thought at the time it was probably somebody melting bullets for hunting back in the flint lock or musket days, but since I didn't take that heavy thing with me I can't do any further research to be sure. Thanks again for the info. I now know what that term means.

Del,very nice finds, the Sovereign can make metal detecting fun,and not at all like work. Thanks for sharing. Ron
