Loud or soft

It's all about preference and whatever is comfortable for you. It's been suggested that if your headphones have seperate volume control to turn your detector volume limits to max and adjust with your headphone volume control.

This is exactly what I do.
If your headphones do not have a separate volume control, I suggest getting a good pair that does have this feature. I have been very pleased with my Grey Ghosts and consider them worth the money.
