Lots of square nails

crossotter

New member
When working a civil war site covered with square nails (classic SL IDX with 5.3 coil) Could I get more separation by raising the a few inches off the ground? My targets are not really deep just good relics covered with square nails....any market for square nails he he jack in Arkansas aka crossotter

You generally can get a little more separation, but with some loss of depth, which you already realize. You may laugh but, instead of my MXT, at cellar holes loaded with square nails, I use an old Compass Judge 6 100 khz unit. The high frequency does not allow enough time for the nails to be saturated with the signal, so the the detector does not see them. This is totally different from being discriminated out as being discriminated out still allows for some target masking. The Compass does a great job of picking the goodies out of the iron. My soil here in Maine is very mild, so I am not sure how it would work where you are. Steve

Steve Ihave heard that some where a long time ago. my first detector was a compass Tr Back then I could not afford a judge! Some of the western Ghost towners were using some thing like a 77B; I just cant remember...but they could hunt in the rusty nails ... The site I trying to hunt was a two story collage burnt in 1862 Arkansas. a 9.5 coil will have 5 to 10 nails any where you set the coil down. I would just sift but I cant get permission to do that. I found 2 69 Gardner's and some old silver lots of relics can hide. how do You hunt cellar holes? I located 2 real close to the old college but the rock side walls have cave in.. maybe this winter I will stack the rocks thanks for Your time Jack in Arkansas

Hey Jack

Since you have one of the best trash hunters White's ever produced, why not try to find a Snooper 350 (4 inch)coil for it? The Snooper 350 is no longer in production, but I bet some dealers still have some new old stock ones laying around. They get good depth for no bigger than they are, I have one for my IDX Pro and just like it to sift through the trash with.
