Lots of change and a little gold..

Yesterday I visited a beach I hadn't detected since last winter and I noticed a huge amount of sand had moved so I hunted the wet sand with the Excal and came up with the change and fishing weights, this afternoon I met up with a friend and we hit a different beach and I got the small 14k gold chain with CZ The chain did not make much of a sound with the Excal but it sounded good enough to dig... I love the Excal in the wet sand but I tried it in the water and I didn't like it at all, it was like swinging a 2x4 in the water and I will stick with my PI for the water.

Nice loot. Yes the Excal can be heavy with the stock shaft. If you want to hunt the water with the Excal you need to change to a straight balanced shaft, it makes a world of difference.

Maybe so Bobbie but I'm sticking with my PI in the water Its lighter and its a little deeper..

Now this not about Excal/PI comparison, lets just get that straight. I will probably always own some kind of PI. The Excal cannot be fairly judged, in it's stock form. The unit by original design appears to be for diving, more so that wading and your right, it's just like swinging a 2X4! The unit dramatically changes however, when mounted onto a straight shaft, in the water. Balance is better, it feels lighter and swings (slices) MUCH easier through the water. I know you don't want to plunk any more dough down, but it will be $ well spent, my friend! We use the Lightening Rod. Have I ever lead you astray?

I understand what your saying GH but I will not put more money out for this detector, call me stubborn Anyway as you know I prefer the PI for the water and I have had great success with it and I see no reason to change.. The Excal will be my wet sand detector and the PI for the water

Hey, I'm a PI guy from way back Craig. I would just like to see you try it some, you never know, there could be some real trashy areas, that perhaps you were a little gun shy to hunt and now you can! Stick with whatever tool works for you, just laying options out there for you. I like lots of tools, as some do things better than others.

I agree GH... But I did not use the Excal in more than knee deep water the controls never came close to the water what I felt was the drag from the coil... I guess I'm spoiled by the lightness of the PI... Like I said somewhere the Excal is my wet sand detector and the PI is for the water


PI-Joe just called me after reading my post and wanted me to tell you that I swing fast and hard in the water and he knows about coil drag because he has a big 11" coil on his Headhunter and he told me I have to slow my sweep speed down and I told him I don't want to, I'm used to my sweep speed with my PI and he said I was stubborn .... I am just ask my wife lol... It doesn't change how I feel though lol... I'm still going with my PI in the water

Well Craig, not wanting to whip a dead horse here, but a fast sweep and the Excal is not going to work. It works best when swept slowly. Matter of fact, I drag my coil smoothly and level across the bottom. I wear out (shread) a coil cover quarterly. I order them about three to an order! It's just my style and it works, but PIs can be swept faster, no doubt. Maybe you could alter your style, when using the Excal.
