Does anyone know why when coil is on the ground I have threshold and when I lift coil it dissapears. It still will hit on targets.

Doesn't happen with my CTX. I have threshold whether on the ground or in the air.

Off the top of my head, the only way I can think of that happening is if you've got pinpoint lock enabled, and are hunting in pinpoint mode.

What's your level of experience, and how long have you been using the CTX?

ive been at it for 6 months.i even turn off and then back on.had 17" coil on.i used it the next day with 6" coil it was fine.

That's a new one for me.
Do you ever submerge the detector?

It isn't a problem with the headphones/connection instead is it? I could certainly see the Koss-30s doing that.

Have you tried doing a factory reset of it? I can't imagine anything could cause it to behave like that.

The only thing that I can think of is ground balance. The larger coil might be mineralization while on the ground and silent while in the air.

Without seeing your settings, ALL the settings, everything you have done to it, I don't know if anyone here can is going to be able to offer anything but guesses.

With no threshold I am wondering if the audio is blanking as could happen if you pass over an object that is discriminated out.
If your soil is extremely rich in iron and with the large coil could it be thinking it sees an iron target????
Try reducing your sensitivity and see if that makes a difference.
Other than that the 17" coil must be the problem, since it works fine with your smaller coil...
Just guessing.

I started yesterday to respond similar to what Gabby is saying. Another way of telling, most reliable way to me,
would be to go in and turn your threshold up as high as you can get it, walk a long distance with the sensitivity
down to about 12 and see if you pick up the threshold sound. Like Gabby says, with the larger coil, the detector
could be picking up a lot more mineral signal and blanking out the threshold. Reducing sensitivity and moving
around a large area may prove to be worthwhile. I have a house that has been here since before the 1900's,
burned down, and the one I am living in was built in 1909. I can walk across my yard in the "heavy trash" mode
with my sensitivity turned up to 26 and never hear it make a sound and that's with the original 11" coil.
