Lost Jewelry in Lake Erie

Was at Mentor Headlands state park this last weekend and had several people come up to me asking if I could find their lost jewelry. One guys said that he had lost a 1.5 ounce gold chain somewhere in the water straight from the concession stand. Unfortunately I forgot to recharge my battery pack and so my Excalibur II just died. He never gave me his number or name. Probably it is still out there somewhere. That was July 4th...yesterday. The life guard has said that there were several people who have lost rings or other jewelry and so far there have been only one or two people with metal detectors on the beach and they were never in the water.

Had another woman come up to me and ask if I could find her lost wedding ring. She could not tell me where she lost it but it was in the water. Said it was insured for $4500. There is a lot of junk in the water and lots of big gravel so scooping is tough at Mentor. But there have been some pretty good finds at that beach.

I guess I will have to learn to get another battery pack and make sure that I have enough power. I sure would have liked to help those people out but it was not to be.

sounds like a great place to hunt with lots of potential.......state parks on this side of state dont allow detecting until after labor day.....chains can be very hard to get a signal off of unless its coiled up or you swing over the clasp.....good luck...

Wow, that chain ( if its 14k) is basically a 1200 dollar bill laying in the water, and ring sounds even better. Maybe I should look for air fare

Mentor Headlands state park is more like a Florida beach than any beach I've ever seen in Ohio. It is a one mile long beach and it is huge. It has fine brown sand up to the water and then it becomes gravely. Of the few times I've been there, I've always found something to make getting there worthwhile.

On Monday (July 4th) I was there and there must have been at least 15,000 people there. It has a huge parking and camping area and detecting is allowed on the beach and in the water. There are boats that dock just out of the swimming area and so it is very popular with people with money. Lots of wave runners run back and forth along the beach. More activity I've never seen in all my years of water detecting, even in Florida.

From the bling I saw on some of the people, I would say it is the best beach to detect in Ohio. The gravel bottom makes it tough to scoop and there is some trash in the water but not enough to make it impossible to have a good hunt.

I can't make it there very often as work and distance makes it tough to get there very often. But it is tempting to try getting there after hearing people talking about their lost jewelry. I'm kicking myself about the battery dying on me. I'll never do that again!
