Lost coil cover

Went out at the low tide to see what the waves and wind was doing. Still kicking beyond the main sand dune. It looked a little dangerous and the lifeguard had a yellow flag. The waves really had an under tow to them. Spent about an hour to find out the sand had moved to the front of the dune filling in the normal cut and it was deep sand. As i came back to shore i was talking to a guy who had some questions and noticed ...... darn my coil cover was GONE. I have a warranty... which obviously wont cover a coil cover but was wondering about choices and how they might affect the warranty.... like running no cover, using epoxy, or be liner on the coil? I rarely run without a cover just because ive notice the front and real of the coil tend to wear. Hate to buy another one... but got to protect my investment i believe.

i dont use coil covers i have white marine epoxy on the bottom of my coil (white so i can c when its time to reaply)

yea, I think you ought to try to get another coil cover, if you can..you have to protect your coil, they are not cheap....

Hey Dew,

You can use velcro tie straps found at Wal Mart to hold the cover in place. If you scrub the coil they will wear out quickly but an entire roll is around $4.oo.

I sent a letter to ML.... here is the answer i got today:

Technically the warranty covers defective equipment (premature failure) not lost items. However I am sending you a replacement skidplate out of courtesy to your listed address in Englewood Fl.

Also bedliner spray or marine epoxy is an acceptable alternative and would not void your warranty. FYI you might try nylon cable ties to secure your new skidplate to the coil. Hope this helps.

Thou not a pricy item ive got to give them their dues on a fast reply and customer service.... i know im sure happy.

Tom this was for my Xcal. On an added not there is a ML Conference being held in Chi town that i posted in the Explorer class room that might be of interest to some of you on training, tech talk, and NEW equipment. The web site should be there as well.

I have called ML myself about a few problems and they all ways go out of their way to satisfy the customer. I think most people don't call them for whatever reason. I sent my Excall in last year for a cracked and leaking Ikelite connector it returned with a new board, cables just like a new one. And all the time people were complaining about the service. Put you a small spot of silicone on the front and back of your coil and put the cover on. This will keep the cover on and makes for easy removal. HH :minelab:

Thanks Tom for your offer. OK.... got another Email from ML, first off the conference was in Sept, but he said this about bed liner spray:

Upon further consultation the bedliner spray is a no no, however marine epoxy is a go. Hope this helps again.

Sinerely,

John Watson

I use bedliner spray on all my coils. Used to use epoxy but found that it would chip fairly easily and I had to continually re coat. Since I went the bedliner route I can get about 6 months of heavy hunting out of an application before I have to re spray. Yes, I am aware that the spray will void the warranty but if I had to spend all my time worrying about warranty's I would be a nervous wreck. Besides, I have waterproof connectors on the coils and keep one stock in the event a machine goes south and check it against that one so if it is the coil I just change it out (WOT's) It is also a good idea to have multiple machines so if one or 2 do go down and need repair you can still hunt IMHO

Nervous wreck.... thats me lol. It sure would be nice if they allowed a little more variance for warranties.... like allowing us to add a WOT or new head phones.

I use the bed liner also. Of course I am a Sovereign man so I am not dealing with a permanent wired coil. I get about 6 months too. I retouch going into Winter and then I am good for next season. I also have an AT Pro and I know for a fact that Garrett does not care about bed liner spray as far as warranty issues. I have been using the bed liner spray from Pep Boys now for about three years. I have never had an issue with it. I haver never seen seen epoxy degradation. I feel liberated on the beach not worrying about a cover. Covers on the beach suck. I stick my coil right into those breaking waves. Nothing you can with a cover in those conditions will be sufficient. I have about eight different coils right now that are coated. I have dealt with many people on the forums and have probably sold ten more that were coated. I take care not to get it on the wire. I have just never had a problem. I don't beat my coils on the rocks. But I will scrape the sand. To each his own. I will say that if bed liner becomes a problem I will find and use something else. Going back to a cover for me is not an option.

I alway take the White String tape and tape all my coil covers to my loop in about 4 direction. They should last for a few days even in the salt water. even if you wear one out you still have 3 more. Easy Fix

I think there customer service is great, last summer my wife slipped and fell off the boat ladder with my 4 month old SE Pro, they both went under. Needless to say my SE was ruined. I called ML as soon as I got home. He said mail it in. I said its not covered under warranty is it? "I mean it's not a water proof machine" he said mail it in. So I did. I got it back a month or so later, but it still wasn't working right. "it wouldn't always turn on when pressing the power button" so. Called ML back they said send it back. I did, one week later a brand new SE pro was at my door NO CHARGE. How you going to beat that?
