Lost as a ball in high weeds!!

I've been md at a old iorn furnace and noticed that i get good tone(high coin) and id on target when swiped. i can go 90deg. off and swipe and get iron id but it bounces bet iron & high coin. can change angles and target will still bounce but can move coil in a small area (ie. 1") and get good id. I planted a dime 1yr ago (must need fertilizer, still only one dime) at 6". I can swipe the dime and get id even with the coil 3" above target but it too will give a iron indication every now and then. The cz70 is still new to me ,( only gone through one set of batteries) so i was wondering if this is a dig indication or not. Hoped some of you pro's could give me some advise. HH!!

Here's what I do for what it's worth. IF the target is deeper than say 7" (maybe a tad less in heavy mineralization or dissolved iron) and it's apparently coin sized (use auto to check this) and I'm getting a great reading one way and a bouncer between iron and something from tab on up, I dig. Also, if it's a site that has produced excellent old coins at the limit of the CZ's discriminator and I get any sign of a positive tone 90 degrees from each other, I dig.... again if it's sounds like a coin sized target. Lastly, if you have the gumption and energy, don't be afraid to dig some of the four way iron signals that barely pinpoint and are small. The reason is the CZ's and most other detectors will ID as iron with good targets that are beyond the capability of the discriminator. Good luck!

Practice makes us better in either hobby..Heck used CZ's since 92 and still get fooled as although CZ's are deep they do like iron...After one set of batteries I was completely lost as it does take time might want to peruse Mikes CZ page...http://mikewd.fws1.com/......as it contains many tips and of course which each set of batteries you use you will get better..we have all dug our share of iron over the years including Mike but after a while you will just know its a coin..and dig very little iron...and many deep coins...

Sounds like good ideas to me. I will check mikes cz page also. Love the CZ, I wouldn't trade it for a gold monkey ! well?? maybe a gold monkey. Thanks for the Link Dan. HH!!

I too have detected around old iron furnances. Iron slag that's been in the ground for many years can create a halo that drives metal detectors crazy. I've got a CZ7 and and an Excel. Both are good machines but it's tough around these types of places. Also remenber that iron furnances were pretty rough work and folks didn't carry a lot of change in their pockets.
