losing threshold tone.....

I recently purchased an excal 1000 and was trying it out at a property in southern west Virgina...I set the sens to auto, threshold barley audible and when I move the coil the threshold goes silent ...if i stop moving it comes back...?? tried different areas of the yard and same result... it seems to pick up different coins (that I lay on the ground) and has the different tones for each but doesn't hold the tone when i move away...am i doing something wrong? I understand it will null when it sees iron but all the time? thanks for any help.

I have a Sovereign and I took it to a local school yard and it did the same thing when in manual sensitivity.. even at min. setting.
In auto it does much better, but still nulls some.
I believe in my case the ground is highly mineralized.. I can't even use my pinpointer here because when I get a signal, it just vibrates everywhere I place the tip.
I'm wondering if the sensitivity control is working on your detector. Maybe the ground is full of iron.
Maybe try another location to see what happens would be my suggestion.
Many other folks more knowledgable than me on the Sovereign will chime in to help I'm sure.
These guys are very good at helping others.

The Excalibur same as the sovereign when in disc mode will discriminate iron automatically, to let you know you passed over something iron(or any other discriminated item)it will silence the threshold. From your settings i would say your yard is full of iron and the reaction of the excalibur is normal. Coins and non discriminated items will come through the null(silence) sometimes if not too deep and masked.

Ok thank you you for your reply's...Ill give it a whirl on some different ground and see what happens. this property is an old farm so it most likey has alot of iron scraps about.
