losing threshold tone when coil is moved..?????

I recently purchased an excal 1000 and was trying it out at a property in southern west Virgina.. mineralized soil maybe? (I Know its primarly a water machine but was not near any down here).I set the sens to auto, threshold barley audible and when I move the coil the threshold goes silent ...if i stop moving it comes back...?? tried different areas of the yard and same result... it seems to pick up different coins (that I lay on the ground) and has the different tones for each but doesn't hold the tone when i move away...am i doing something wrong? I understand it will null when it sees iron but all the time? thanks for any help.

I use a Sovereign and an Excal. With the Sovereign I sometimes run into heavy mineral ground or EMI. How do I know? The threshold goes silent. I then know to back down the sensitivity. Sometimes if I feel lazy I will flip it to auto. The threshold then returns. So I look at your situation and have to say it is one of four things.

1. You were in some nasty soil or EMI areas. Being in auto should have settled things down. So this had to be nasty for this to be the problem.
2. You did not have the detector set up correctly. Threshold turned up high enough to hear? Were you really in Auto or full sensitivity? Did the switch make the click? Were you in Discrimination?
3. Was the battery fully charged?
4. The detector needs some work.

I would take it to a different site. If the detector is unable to recover from a null and go to a threshold then it needs looked at. You are aware that the threshold retains the tone of the last target. Low or high. The number one problem people have with Excals is trying to run too hot. But you say you were in auto. That is the disturbing part.

Hello Goodmore and thank you for your reply, The area I was in was an old farm and being close to virgina its possible that the soil is alot diffrent than where I live in Ohio, I re checked and the knob does click when it goes to auto senistivity. The discrimination was set between 2 and 3 I havent tried it higher ...and the battery was fuly charged or at least I think it was I just got the unit and charged it about 12 hours before using it, I suppose it might be a weak battery? ..Ill try and get to a diffrent location. I was aware that the tone will hold for the last target it sees and that it should null on iron. Just want to cover all my bases before I send it in only to find it was "operator error" But thank you agin for the advice . Chilly

Put your Disc. on 1 Auto Sens. Threshold barely audible shake coil cable make sure battery connections are clean. If you are still having problems it could be a bad cell in the battery. If you get noise from shaking coil cable tighten fittings with hands no tools if that don't fix the problem could be the coil. If the battery is fully charged it should read a little over 13 volts.but it should run on less volts. Hope this helps. HH :minelab:

If it's an old farm there may be lots of pices of iron in the ground, and if you are in disc. then the excal would be trying to null out the iron (and probably getting very confused). Try somewhere else, and, as stated by others, if the problem persists, you may have to get it looked at.

I guess the beach is not as loaded with metal targets as a yard......thank you for posting the videos and the Grand son was really cute..was he asking you to let him listen or did he want to use the detector? Makes you wonder what kind of metal detectors they will have available to them. thanks again for taking the time to post the videos I actually found a few more of yours on youtube I havent seen.
