Loose Shaft

New member
I'm new on the etrac but noticed play between the upper and lower shafts...is this common?

Not on mine...

There should be no play whatsoever. Are you sure the shaft connector lever is fully locked? The lock lever should be parallel to the shaft.

Okay thanks...yes it is locked tight but moves just enough to annoy me!

There's a rectangular shim in the shaft lock mechanism that helps tighten it all up when the lever is fully engaged in the lock position.
I believe its only glued on and can sometimes fall off. Make sure its there.

Mine does the same thing. I believe there was a previous thread on this. All I do to.fix the problem is retract the lower shift into the upper shift. Of course this shortens the etrac but no more wobble in your shaft lol

Yes, check to make sure that rectangular shim is in place. Eventually mine wore out from wear and caused the shaft to slip. I added DB-Weld on the shim to get it thicker and lock tight which worked for about a year until it annoyed me again and I bought a new shaft.

when I have my WOT on and get a good swing agoing and the shaft is extended a bit I have a little bit of wobble

I contacted Minelab about this very same issue with my out-of-warranty Etrac. They sent me two replacement parts which fixed the problem for free. So now I have a backup should the current one fail. Impressed me with their service!

This probably isn't the problem but another forum member some years ago posted the same question. I emailed him and asked if he had the upper shaft in up side down. He mailed me back that he couldn't believe he installed the upper shaft backwards :detecting:

If it's the upper shaft that's loose make sure the locking mechanism is facing down not up.

I would think the only other reason would be you have a faulty locking mechanism.

Hope this helps.

As timing would have it,
i was in a hurry today with only an hour to detect in that hunted out park under the hi voltage lines.
Changed coils/shafts in the field fast not paying attention to what i was doing. Ended up installing the shaft upside down.
Yep, it wobbled bad. After a couple minutes of WTH's goin on?...... noticed the coil cable was on my left side of the coil and the locking lever was on top.
Make sure the locking lever is on the bottom of the shaft, not the top.

All's was well after it all got fixed, i ended up finding a merc, a wheat and a Jefferson nickel in that short hunt.
