loose explorer shaft

I have an early Explorer XS and have never had a problem with it. But yesterday I switched from my 8" coil to the 10.5 " standard coil. When I pushed the shaft up into the control housing, I couldn't get the camlock to really tighten down. The shaft would just slowly ooze down and get wiggly on me. What's up with that, and how do I tighten that thing down? Please don't tell me that I have to send it in, as it is well out of warranty; I just want to fix it and use it! Thanks, Chuck

Chuck, you can wrap a little tape to give it a tighter fit for now but you will eventually have to send it in for a new housing. I'm in the exact same boat with an older Explorer I picked up in the last few months. I know there was no charge for this for a very long time but can't say what the deal is now.
Make sure your brass pin is all the way in, in the camlock. Does your shaft have the dimple about 1 inch from the top? They hold a little better.

Cut the extra balloon piece off. I don't think you'll be able to get the shaft on if you don't. Good luck.

Hi Chuck,
Make sure that the brass shaft pin is fully in touch with both sides of that shaft housing. I have both explorers and both seem to have the same condition where the brass shaft on the cam lock works loose after awhile. If it is off center it is pretty easy to push back into alignment. On the other hand I have several upper shafts and some seem to fit tighter than others. Good Luck !

The problem is not in most case's the shaft. It is the lock. You can use a paper match under the cam lock to put added pressure on the cam.

<IMG SRC="/metal/html/pulltab.gif" BORDER=0 width=54 height=24 ALT="sB"> We have found the same problem on our xs machines.
the best way that we could find was to cut thin shims of plastic washing up liquid bottle and insert the shims into gap and tighten.
ps you will probably hit another problem with the xs, check that your connection inside of the box is tight. The securing ring can undo if the box is loose on the shaft. (use some threadlock on the connection or PTFE tape)

TRY PAINTING ON A BIT OF PLASTI-COTE ON THE SHAFT. $8 BUCKS A CAN AT LOWES OR HOME DEPOT! ALSO DIP YOUR HAND PROBE IN THE CAN TO COAT IT FOR WEAR!
