Loose Explorer SE shaft

jim cluster

New member
The shaft that goes into the control panel keeps coming out, what a pain!!! I was wondering if there is any way to tighten the cam lock (or what ever the latch is called) Any help out there, on this one?

I had that problem when I broke it down, when I reassembled it I put the upper shaft in wrong and it kept wiggling outso see if you can turn it around and see if it locks

I haven't had to do it yet but they say a piece of electrical tape on the top helps take up the slack.

I thought all the newer Explorers had a crimp at the top to stop that from happening. My XS slips out but not with the mid rod I got with my x-1 probe, it came with a crimp and stays put. It has to be put in so the crimp is in the back side for it to work.

paying full retail price for your new Minelab......$1200.oo

spending a day swinging and finding coins worth...... $12.oo

Keeping a $1.2o roll of DUCT TAPE handy........PRICELESS

Hi guys my xs did the same but when i took the cam lock apart i noticed that the little square metal plate was missing ,so i cut me a new one and hey PRESTO all fixed.terry in oz

The shaft is cut at about a 30 degree angle (guessing???) and the long point needs to be on the bottom when installed into the Control Box. I just started detecting in July of last year and it drove me crazy on my first day out. :rage: But once I flipped it over and slid it in the rest of the way, it lock up good, and hasn't given me any problems since. Though the shaft does give me a squeak at the end of my swing off and on. I just readjust the lower shaft, re-lock it, and that usually does the trick. Hope this is your problem, I hate to seeing duct tape on such a nice machine. :nono:

NOW I'M ONE HAPPY CAMPER!!!:clapping: THANK YOU FOR THAT SIMPLE TIP. IT GOES TO SHOW YOU THAT I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT'S HAD THIS PROBLEM.

It's either that or taking the Shaft out and giving it a light coat of spray paint. I haven't stooped to that level yet. Good Luck and HH.

Hi dave looks like yours has fallen out too,but mine is the xs dont know if the other models have the metal plate but it is worth checking out.terry in oz

That only works if you don't already have an X-1 probe mounted on the shaft. Mine was installed with the long end of the angle to the side. I have already tried the duct tape trick and it worked for awhile
but now slips all the time. My next try is going to be adding a hose clamp...wonderful huh? I had the same problem with my ExS duct worked for a month of swinging then had to add .002 shims. I never did solve the problem
Now silly me i figure with all the compaints about this problem Minelab would surely fix it with the new ExII. And so here we are STILL trying to fix our $1200.oo machines with tape, glue, shims and hose clamps.
Sorry for all the whinning but i just got my schedual for rotor cuff surgery on my swinging arm and it looks like i'm out of the game for awhile. Maybe by the time i recover this company can figure out how
to lose some weight on their machines and get all the bugs out.

Has anyone thought of buying a spare DFX shaft from White's and mounting the SE on it? Don't know why I thought of it today, out detecting.
