I'm heading out at 6:00 am in the morning, Ron. I got permission to metal detect this old swimming hole that is closed to the public. It's a natural spring and I used to swim there about 45 years ago as a boy. People have been using it for about 200 years, maybe more.
I know it's full of trash, but I have my sniper coil ready to go and I hope to find something special.
I wrote the owner and his wife a letter and asked permission and they said as long as I go by myself and lock the gate back, I can go anytime I want to. He gets any Indian artifacts I find and I get to keep all the coins I find. I've never met this man, but found out he and his wife owned the property and sent him a handwritten letter and he called me up and said go for it. Really nice people. The previous owners used to let the public use this area free, but too many people took advantage of their generosity and left a mess of trash and beer bottles. The new owner and his family removed over 50 barrels of trash from this site.
I should be able to metal detect until about 10:30, maybe later. The skeeters and snakes don't worry me as much as the heat. It's blistering hot in my area and humid also. We used to throw watermelons in the cold spring during the summer and six packs of soda, also. After swimming for an hour or two, we would cut the melon and have a feast and wash it down with a pepsi or coke. Those were good days for myself and my friends. The drunks and drug users spoiled it for everybody, tho. Such a shame!
I wish I had an At-Pro for the deep spring. Maybe I will find a nice ring and pay for one with it. I hope to find enough to buy a decent water scoop as well.

The day time temperatures here on the lower Salmon River of Idaho in the canyon have been in the 90's on up to around104. The grass and some types of brush are extremely dry. Even had a lighting strike fire near Riggins yesterday but fortunately was in a rocky area and did not burn much ground.

I've done very little metal detecting this summer. Gave it a try this morning on one of the river beaches but as soon as the clouds made a hole, the temperature zoomed up out in the open. Did try some last weekend but only to find lead for bullet casting and it was not long that it became rediculous. As I sit here now, it's 86.9 in the shade outside.

I'm unsure if it's the economy or the temperatures but this Recreation Gold Dredge Season, I've seen very few Recreation Dredgers, maybe a total of 5 float units and a couple of highbankers. With the rise in Gold prices, I figured for sure we would see dredges all over the place this summer. I know with the cost of fuel, I can no longer run all over the place to metal detect like I used to. I normally see now and then someone metal detecting here in the canyon but I think the last I saw was last fall. Well, all the weather can do is get tolerably cooler, some day.:) Till then, keep the Ice Tea coming.

Ron, it's been muggy and buggy up this way for over a month it seems. Some spots are un-diggable because any plug removed would kill the grass. But there are other spots that are OK, if you don't mind using Deep Woods napalm to keep the mosquitoes at bay.

Fongu ... sounds like you have secured a great spot. And you can be sure there are a million pop can tabs in there, but the goods are there too.

I have not been out for a month but it is not weather related. The wife had knee replacement surgery early in July and still has a ways to go yet before she will be swinging a detector. So I am staying pretty close. Took advantage of the down time and send the At Pro in for the upgrades and that is back, so I am all set detector wise. Second year in a row for us. Last year I had major surgery in June which took out most of the summer. Looking forward to a nice long fall season.

I was full of hope for detecting this old swimming hole. When I got there, I found out that the previous owner had dug it into an irrigation pond and the area was full of muddy water and you bog down if you try to walk out into it. It's been bulldozed and looks like a swamp. 45 years ago it had a nice sandy bottom and cyrstal clear water that was ice cold. What a shock to see something so beautiful become such a quagmire. I used my 9.5, 5 x 10 DD and sniper coil.
I did find lots of pull tabs, beer cans and vienna sausage cans, but no money or rings. I am going back and work upstream some, but this area was full of wild hog tracks and I saw several snakes. I pray my persistence will be rewarded.
I went to the sausage store for some lunch in this small town where I buy our fresh sausage and noticed this old frame house across the 4 lane highway and asked the cashier if she knew who owned it. Turns out the guy who owns the store or works there owns it and he gave me permission to search it. When I went across the highway, some guy came up to cut the grass on a tractor and I didn't want to get in his way, so I left. I went back and told the owner I would be back Wednesday early around 6:30 am so he would know when to expect me.
I went to the local fresh water beach and found 58 cents before the crowds got on my nerves and I had to leave. I found a 1964 D penny, but it was all scarred up from a lawnmower or weedeater.
I'm going back Wednesday and go to the old house and then back to the local beach on the river and do a little water detecting. Just wish I had a scoop. The old swimming hole will have to wait until September, because about 10: am, the moquitoes who were the size of quail tried to drain me of what little blood I have and I had to leave it with them. It should start to cool off a little then.
I sent out two other letters last week about an old school that the local Lion's club owns and have heard no response and there is a Methodist campground about 10 miles from here and I'm waiting on a reply from them, also.
I may be getting more leads than I am able to handle, but I am anticipating having something worthwhile to post this month. So far I have two people who gave me permission and both of them have requested that I go alone and it makes me think that if a group of people go on their property it's harder to hold them responsible than if just one person does it, I really don't know. I'm a loner anyway, so it's right up my alley.
Happy hunting.

I had to cancel my trip today due to the heat. It rained about 2-1/2 tenths last night and with the heat, humidity and rain, the quail-(mosquitoes), are flying again. Praying for cooler weather soon. If it just got to the mid-80's, degree wise, that would be a great blessing.
I got permission to search some cut over timber and this property borders a stream and as soon as it cools off and the mosquitoes are not so bad, I intend to work it with my 12-1/2 inch coil, nice and slow.
I believe this stream was used by the Creek Indians and the Yamasse tribe as well. I will be on the look out for any piles of broken rocks and stones. This could mean arrowheads or other relics.
Metal detecting sure does lead a person into a lot of different hobbies or interests. I've studied more local and state history in the last 2 years as I had during school.
Now, if I could just find that 1943 copper penny or the 1959 wheat penny? Lol. I would not turn down a stash of gold coins tho.
You never know what's going to wind up under your search coil and that's what makes this hobby so interesting and exciting.
Happy hunting.
