Looking to start

Well ya'll got me hooked. I've been lurking here for a while now, reading your posts and looking at you finds.....COOL!

I need to get me one of these puppies but i have price problems. I don't want to throw down a bunch of money to start, besides money's tight. was looking at a couple cheaper models at radio shack, like under a hundred, and was also noticing Harbor freight had some too. What do ya'll think of those? worth it or not?

I also noticed a couple tracker 4's on ebay for around $98 w/o shipping and from the topics on here it might be my better bet. Was just trying to find the best deal and ya'll's thoughts for the rookie.

Many of the lower priced detectors at Radio Shack(lower priced Radio Shack, but the ones $180 up are much better) and Harbor freight are really toys and will not do well and in many case will do more harm than good is your are considering detecting. It will get the new coins on the ground plus most of the trash too. Now i am sure you can get lucky and find something good too the the odds are not too good. The Tracker IV is a decent detector, but I think I would try to go a little bit better and you can find a use Tesoro Compadre for about the same price and you will have a great detector and easy to use. A friend had one a couple of weeks ago he was selling for $100 and he has sold it or I would recommend you talk to him. If you want to go new the Garrett Ace 250 or the Fisher F-2 for around the $200 price tag also would be good.

A used Compadre for $100 or so is a super unit for someone to start with. I handed one to a total novice last weekend and he found two items of ladies jewelry and a couple of old pistol balls while ignoring most trash. One knob, lighweight, reliable, great battery life and excellent for working in trashy areas.

my hubby picked a BH lonestar for 150 on sale. pretty decent machine. however i have BH outback...( just to start with ) for 100 at big 5. i am saving for a different detector now that i think i may have the hang of things. the cheap detector has brought me many treasures to the table and with it being so cheap i was able to find enough to replace the cost of it in no time. and landed me a pic in the LostTreasure online newsletter within the first month of owning it. but if i would have researched a bit more i would have picked up a ace 250 or similar.

Tracker IV is a good machine to start with for anybody. I still use mine for tot lots and find lots of clad and jewelry. I learned to ignore the meter and just listen to the tones. It's light weight, easy to swing and builds a lot of confidence. Buy new, not used and you will get a warranty. PM me if you want more info on this detector.

Michael you don't need an expensive detector to start out. Get what you can afford. I would get a used one from Classified section on this forum. Chances are that if you really like metal detecting you will be itching to get a better one in a very short time. With your finds and selling your detector you can up grade quickly. If you don't like it, it will be in the closet. Not much money spent. Just from experience.... Z

I have used a radio shack Jr I got for about $60.00 for 3 years now, I haven't found any old coins, course I can't get to to many places, but I have found a couple of nice rings and a lot of interesting old items. Right now I am working the depot 2 blocks from my house, I go there a couple of times a day, the building is over 100 years old so I am leaving the discriminator off and checking every beep.

Michael, like lytle78 & Rick(ND) said, you would do quite well with
a Tesoro Compadre ($151 @ most online dealers), the best little
"sleeper" detector in the hobby today and lifetime warranty too!

Michael,

Go to E-BAY and type in Metal Detectors. You can find so many different type of metal detetors that fit into your budget. I just like everyone else here would hate to see you get something and not be happy. Like most everyone said, you don't have to start out with a $500-$1000 dollar machine to find treasures. There are so many ways to go. Good Luck, and have fun.

Been detecting thirty years. Owned about fifty detectors or so. Own 12 now. I own a Comparde and 11 others. Best detector for the money is the Garrett Ace 250. Own 2 of them One for me and one for my wife. Own an Explorer, Fisher F70. Whites XLT , Tersoro Golden. Fisher F4 and 7 others The Ace 250 gets a lot of use from me.. The Ace 250 is not only a good starter detector but about all long time users own one. For $212.00 it is the best detector hands down.....Jack

I love my Ace 250. I just started back in March and see my stuff below.

Its a great hobby, If your looking to be frustrated , Wife mad because you didn't return home when you said.dirty, ticks, mosquitos. I say go for it. I found a top of the line detector at a yard sale,DfX for $80 used once I jump all over it.
