Looking to buy a Garrett -- Please help

Hi all,

I am thinking seriously about getting back into this sport that I enjoyed throughout my youth. I bought a Garrett Treasure Ace 300 back in 1997. Now that I have a career I would like to upgrade my unit. I am looking at the GTI 2500, the AT Gold, or the AT Pro. I would love to hear the main differences between the three. I am mainly interested in the search for old coins, silver, gold, and jewelry. From what I gather...the AT's would be better for under water searches than the GTI? What are some of the others positives and negatives of the units. What makes the GTI 2500 the top of the line and most expensive of all Garrett's? What is so beneficial about the AT gold or pro? Any and all opinions and help on this matter will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

Ok, I'm not experienced very well with these but have been looking to buy for a while now. Maybe I can give some input. Each has their specialty draw. The AT Gold and Pro are waterproof up to 10 feet. Both feature new technology. They are lighter, faster, use less batteries, and, on some things and in the right condition, can go deeper than the GTI. The AT Gold is a general purpose detector that is designed for prospecting. The Pro can do so too, but the Gold has the edge. The GTI is a bit old. I remember when I first got interested in detecting in 2001 and looking at a 2500. Still want one. Hope to get one. To get real deep, you need to run it in all metal mode, though I hear you can notch out certain numbers without much of a loss in depth. The big plus with the GTI, which I love, is the imaging. It tells you the approximate size of the target. I also prefer the user interface of the GTI over the AT series. That's just me. I recommend finding someone close by with each of these and trying them out.

That will make it easier. Relics, coins, jewelery, water, meteorites, natural gold, gold jewelry, silver coins

My main concern will be coins. Looking for silver.. but don't want to miss out on much jewelry or gold either. I'll be searching ghost towns, boom towns, and old farm homesteads. I won't be searching a ton of soft sand or water areas...although I would like that option and to do so in the future.

I have a 1500 ,2500 and a AT pro. I use all units but find that the AT pro is my main hunting detector now. No special reason except its the lighter of all the units.Seems to go a little deeper ?? and I like the DD coil. Did put a DD coil on my 2500 like that to. That works well also. The AT Pro is cheaper and could be the last detector you'll ever need to buy. Unless you need it right now I would wait a couple of more months and see if anything new comes out from Garrett. If your in an area you can hunt now than go for it. Don't know much about the AT Gold but don't like the smaller DD coil on it . I would end up buying the larger DD coil.

Are the AT Gold and the AT Pro essentially the same machine, with the AT Gold..just having the added feature of being more efficient on gold? Pardon my ignorance...just trying to make the right choice. In other words, what is beneficial to having the Pro over the Gold? Is it only because it is $100 cheaper or is the Pro more efficient in some areas..such as silver or coins in general?

The At Gold doesn't have a coin display on the screen . The operating frequency is higher . For general hunting ( coin, artifact hunting) I think the AT Pro would be a better choice.. I really don't think you gain any advantage with AT Gold and the DD coil is smaller.

The only real way you'd have an advantage with the AT Gold would be if you were in highly, and I mean highly, mineralized soil.

Thanks guys! I think i am getting closer to making that final decision. I just discovered this site over the weekend. I love it.

You're welcome! I was in the same boat as you when I found it. I think I'm more confused now after discovering the T2. I went from wanting a GTI 2500 to a GTI 2500, T2, Infinium, possibly an AT Pro and either a G2 or AT Gold.

I think I would want the AT Pro. I have the Ace 250. I also have the Compadre and know the effectiveness of having discrimination around NEARLY a/m mode and sifting out coins in iron trash. I think this is the new fronteir of detecting in an age where everyone uses a detector. It's amazing the amount of masking that is present that I never knew.

I would go for the Garrett AT Pro. Being somewhat waterproof, you would not have to worry about rain putting you out of operation. The AT Pro has various discrimination modes for looking for silver, while searching amongst trash. The AT Gold may not have the discrimination features you will want hunting in parks, ghost towns, etc. If you plan to park\field\ghost town hunt greater than 80% of the time then go AT Pro. If you plan to pan, sluice, and dredge, go for AT Gold.

I have a AT pro but like my 1500 better 4 coin hunting
good luck

I am newly retired and new to your site. I am seeking advice and maybe future training in metal detecting. I have chosen this hobby because I do not want to sit in front of the TV. MY question is, I am leaning toward the Garrett AT Pro. I am on fixed income and need this machine to last because upgrades may not be possible. Thank you in advance.

I have an Ace 250, but would like to have The AT Pro for it's "waterproof to 10 feet" feature.

To me, this means not for scuba diving, but the ability to get wet while searching the surf. Also rain protection. What I can do now is use a ziplock bag over the yellow fellow and stay out of the surf.

Be safe and satisfied, get an AT Pro. And while your at it, pickup the Garrett Pro Pointer, you'll be glad you did. I consider the Pro Pointer an essential!

I just bought an AT Pro and Pro Pointer and got a good deal on a package. PM if interested.

Check out the videos on the AT/Pro and any other detector you might be interested in. After watching the videos this week and seeing the effect of the iron audio in reducing the digging of trash targets and the ability to get wet, I'm ordering the AT/Pro this afternoon. I have the GTI-2500, but can't get but a few feet from the shore due to the depth of the water. I sincerely believe I can pay for the At/Pro with the jewelry in the local spot I detect at and I have found 3 other places that are too deep for the 2500 and already have permission to search one of the three. The place I go to now is public, but the other 3 places are on private property. If I had been able to watch these videos sooner, I would have ordered my at/pro before now. Hope you find something you are happy with. Good luck and happy hunting.

I have 7 high end metal detectors. Each one has a specific purpose, except the AT Pro. It is my all around coin, jewelry and relic machine
I have a CTX 3030, excallibur II 1000, whites DFX, MXT, Gold Bug II, Ace 250 and my AT Pro.

There is not another detector on the market today that will perform any better than the AT Pro. It has most of the features of machines costing 4 to 5 times as much.

Garrett service is like Whites, both have the best service in the industry. Need I say more? Price, features, service. Your honor, I rest my case.
