I used a CX 111 for a few months and it seemed to be quite a good detector with stacks of features. If you like bells and whistles the CX 11 has a few.
It did not like our Aussie mineralisation which threw the TID and depth readings out a bit.
Very capable in parks and gardens and tot lots and a pretty good relic machine. It has good sensitivity to small gold & sil jewelery items.
I used it on the dry sand beaches but not good on the wet sand (salt).
If I had to choose another Garrett detector over the CX111 in a similar price range I might go for the 1500.
Theyr'e OK, just learn how to use it, give yourself time, or spend more money, and still give yourself time, give it a chance in your type detecting, then make a decision on what you want a detector to do for YOU
I still have and occasionally use the original Grand Master Hunter from which the CX series was derived. I would think that they are updated versions of the GMH which I know for sure is a very good detector. The only negative issue for me was the weight. I had shoulder surgery a few years ago and it got to be just too much to swing. If it was not for the weight issue, I would probably still be using it daily.
I bought a new cxII back in the early 90's and did not like it. It was unbalanced and would be lucky to hit a half dollar at 5 inches. Might work for a shallow clad coin hunter but I wouldn't use it as my main detector.
I forgot to mention, The Proformance line of coils from Garrett work on this machine. The original round 12.5" coil had a huge crack in the case when I got it so I replaced it with the 7X10 Proformance concentric. Have hit dimes at 8 inches with it. They also make a 14 inch DD coil for it but I found it to be too heavy to swing.
One final thought. I sent mine in (20++) years old, and Garrett went through it completely and restored it to factory specs for under $100 including shipping.
thanks everyone for all the info and thoughts!Jerry thanks for letting me know about the coils ,that is great to know and plan on taking another look at the cxIII, Mark
