hi everyone. i read this forum all the time but i dont post much cause i dont know how to load pics. i got my etrac in february and i love it. i found alot of great stuff i'll try to post them soon. sometimes my etrac starts acting eratic and and falses alot, and i found that if i clean under the coil cover it fixes it. if the grass is wet i have to clean it often. it dont seem to take much dirt under there to screw it up. i was wondering if there was a way to seal out the dirt and water. i was thinking maybe fishtank sealer, or apply electric grease to displace the air gaps were thr dirt seems to lay. im open to ideas so please leave your opinions. i read the manual and i guess oil-based products are a no-no on the coil. thanks. mike from pa

Are you running your sensitivity at max, or on auto?

I've never had my coil cover off and it has been used in the rain and gotten quite dirty. Because of this I have a hard time believing your coil cover is the problem. However, you may have soil or dirt that is less neutral than mine in the midwest.

If you have a SunRay probe, have you checked all your connections and made sure they are tight and clean? Inspected the coil wire for cuts or breaks? Taking the coil cover off is an option, but coil covers are cheaper than coils especially if you work rocky or constructions sites rather than manicured lawns. I tend to keep my coil as close to the ground as possible, so for me a coil cover is a must.

I would not use grease, it will make the problem worse as it will trap the dirt. If you really feel the dirt in the coil cover is the problem, maybe try using it with the coil cover off and see if the problem goes away. If it does, I would clean it all up, and run a smooth bead of silicone caulking around the seam to seal it up.

Take the coil cover off .It also makes the coil lighter.

Thats the ticket right there. I just coated a few sov coils with truck bed liner after removing those covers and will be doing my 12X10 SEF on my etrac the same way. on the beach a little sand and water between the coil cover and coil can make the detector unstable and Duke your right, loose the cover and its lighter to swing also.

i m not certain its the coil cover causing the problem but cleaning it sure helps a bunch. ive tried reseting it and it would stabilize, but at a lower sensitivity in auto, and manual sens would go berzerk. where i hunt, i suspect there is alot over differant ground types due to heavy mining of coal and iron ore. i like hunting close to the ground too so i'd like to keep the cover on. maybe the sealer idea is my best bet. thanks for the help

My E-trac does not behave like that. I would do a master reset for sure. I take my coil cover off periodically and clean it. It's super light so the weight is not an issue at all for me. If you apply sealer, be careful not to use something that reacts with plastic. You might want to get in contact with Minelab about the problem if it continues. I would do that before putting sealant on it which might void the warranty. Good luck. Dan
