Looking for reccomendations for high quality headphones for my Explorer XS please...

Hi, my name is Bill. After owning my Explorer for one year I'm glad that I finally discovered this forum. Many knowledgeable people with lots of good info here!
The head phones that came with the detector gave up on me. So I am looking for some phones that will 'compliment' the Explorer. I have a couple of cheap phones that I have tried, one has muffled, dull sound the other pair is falling apart. WHAT WORKS BEST AS FAR AS SOUND QUALITY AND DECENT VOLUME GOES?

Hi Bill,
Most people on the forum including myself seem to use the DetectorPro Gray Ghost series of headphones (available from http://www.dixie-metal-detectors.com/ ) They are high quality headphones that are very comfortable to wear for long hunts. They really block out external sounds to allow you to focus on those deeper signals. I have been using the Deep Woods headphones but I just ordered a pair of Gray Ghost NDT's (No down time) since I like the Gray Ghost line so much. I have tried other brands like Killer B's, but they always seem to pinch my ear making an uncomfortable hunt. From my experience I would recommend getting headphones with dual volume controls since everyone's hearing might not be equal in each ear. When I upgraded to the better headphones things came to life! It was much easier to pick out the audio differences between the various coins. Hope this helps!!! -Brian
 
I forgot to mention that I wouldn't recommend the Deep Woods headphones for the Explorer because they have no volume control! (I discovered this after I bought them <img src="/metal/html/frown.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":("> ) They are desgined so you wouldn't bump the volume controls. Don't get me wrong......they definitely work with the Explorer but it's best to have headphones w/ volume controls so you can turn the volume all the way up on the Explorer itself then adjust the volume to your liking through the headphones. With the Deep Woods I have to adjust the volume through the menu on the Explorer. I discovered this situation has the potential for me to miss deeper, fainter signals because I'm not using the full volume to my advantage since my ears can only handle the volume at level 4. Brian, your info helps a lot. I have been looking at the Gray Ghost line of headphones and I like what I see. The way they feel on your head is important and the audio quality is the other factor in deciding which phones to buy. I wasn't sure if the high impedance (150 ohms) would allow for a good volume level with the Explorer or not. From what you have said it sounds to me like the Gray Ghost headphones would not be a disappointment. If they are popular with a lot of other Explorer users too, that means something in itself. Most people who hunt with the Explorers want the best. It seems that this would hold true when it comes to their choice of audio equipment too.

They are not quite as loud as the GTs but the fact that they block out the outside noise so well makes up for it. Great frequency response, I especially like the clarity on the low pinpoint tone. And they are VERY comfortable. JMHO.

If I remember correctly, you can turn the volume limiter off. What I was wondering is, can you make the Gray Ghosts loud if you want to? Don't get me wrong, I'm not what most people would call hard of hearing. Needless to say, these phones are not real cheap(price or quality)and I am just trying to find out if they are versatile when it comes to volume. Thanks ... Bill/Wash.
 
Hi Bill, Welcome, glad you found this forum, many good people on here willing to share their experiences and expertise. I have an XS and used the original phones for a while and then switched to the Whites/Koss set that I have for my XLT. Several months ago I switched over to the Black Widow phones and they worked out great. One nice thing about them is that they have full-sized ear pads which adds to the comfort and really blocks outside noises. They have individual volume controls, a switchable limiter, and a stereo/mono switch so they can be used with detectors having stereo or mono audio output. Although there are many good, honest dealers on this forum, I purchased my Black Widows through the classifieds. Sure hope all this helps you out. Sure hope you get a set of phones that suit your needs and help you find the deep gold. Bill I found that the limiter dont seem to make any difference on the Explorer, but do on the Sovereign. I have used the Gray Ghost, the Timberwilfs and the Killer bees and find they all are excellent headphone, but being my hearing is not that good I need all the voulme I can get and found the Timberwolfs have the best volume for me. The Black widdows of Gray Ghost are good too along with their other headphone, so any one should do well for you.

If you have an XS with the 1/8th inch jack, then be sure you get the Sunray stand/adapter to use 1/4 inch jack headphones.. any of the gray ghosts work well, I have heard good things on the killer B's and the Timberwolfs also work fine, are a bit louder but are heavier and knock out too much outside noise for my tastes.. the GG NDT's are my phones of choice, and I can carry a spare cable with me, havent had to use them but once, but nice to have that spare with you..
Another thing I like about the NDT's is if I am somewher I want to hear the outside world, they are the most comfortable set I have tried with one of the earcups off the ear.. I wear mine like this quite a bit as I dont like being snuck up on <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
