Looking for old coins in the water

Is it worth it to specifically look for old silver/copper etc. coins in the salt or fresh water?

I ask because the only merc I've found (salt water beach after storm) was black and nearly completely worn down. Also a buffalo nickel found in a lake was pretty rough. Are coins found in water usually alot worse off than coins from land?

Thanks,

James

That is normallly the case especially around salt water.

Fresh water is a different story, It depends on the lake bottom. If you are finding coins there should be jewlery.

Go to your local libary and research your history. I found out about a casino near Canova beach from the 20's. After Hurricane Noel stripped the beac in Oct, my huntin' buddy Terry found several old silvers and buffalo nickels in that area!!!!!!!

Besides, clad can be saved and cashed in for a nice uncirculated whatever, if that's what grabs you. I hunt freshwater and other than stain (which can be removed easily) the wear isn't any worse than diggin' in the dirt.

Like I said, the clad keeps me going between rings and things. :)
