Looking for my first underwater detector

This may have been posted, but the search function wasn't working and I didn't know where else to post.

I'm looking for my first detector. I'll be using it in 15 - 50 feet on average, very very limited shore usage. Mainly poking around docks, freshwater and saltwater, looking for small stuff. I won't be looking for wrecks, gold bars etc.

My budget is around $500 for used equipment, I could be convinced to spend some extra if it was for something special. I've been looking at used Pulse 6x although I have recently read that they are not ideal for smaller items. Thanks!!

You should get a garret seahunter mk 2 they work great on beaches and you can dive with them.

Thanks! Do you agree that the pulse may not be ideal for my needs?

YES, the seahunter mk2 is a pulse induction or PI machine too which is why it gets great depth and can find targets in heavily mineralized beach sand, the best part though is garret is better about fixing them if they are broken and also the seahunter is waterproof down to a depth of 200 feet so its very suited for both on and offshore, i use it on shore on my beaches and found a 1910 barber half dollar at 8-10 inches

whites pulse machines have quality control issues and they dont fix them without you paying an arm and a leg.

They do hold their value. As do all pulse machines.

Whites has always treated me right. This is the first time I ever read anything like this.
Also I would stay away from PI unless you want to dig tiny junk all day like bobby pins they dont Discriminate well at all.

with the seahunter you dont dig bobby pins or junk, it literally discs them out on its own, and still gets gold and silver.

White's service has always been very good to me and certainly not an arm or a leg cost. Very reasonable.....Garrett service is also tops with me......Jack

Whites customer service has been exceptionally nice, repairs have been quick, I even got a call once to discuss exactly what I wanted done, then I got some extras done for free. Cost of repairs seemed reasonable - $75 to replace some chips that I burned out by hurriedly putting batteries in backwards, then re-calibrate the machine. I still use an original Surfmaster PI (purchased in 1999) with the coil brace for very fast surge hunting. What was your issue with them? Was it with the Sweet Home repair center or a regional one? Was it recent?

Do some research on the Tesoro Stingray II. I have one I acquired to hunt in Lake Michigan, however intent exceeded reality........not much fun when water temp is 50 degrees. Tesoro has lifetime warranty and this unit has ability to interchange coils which many other units don't offer. Probably looking at $350 range plus shipping. Also have a Plugger straight shaft for unit which will sell separately. thanks

Garret mailed me a head for my seahunter when the deal filed and coded flooding it cost them $90.00 and they gave it to me free. Next day shipping. I had a part fail on one of my whites machines that was under warranty and they tried to charge me and I said he'll no. Whites does have helpful customer service but I would rather deal with garret or tesoro.

Never buy a tesoro pulse they aren't that good. I have one.

Minelab Excalibur! enough said!

So far what I've gathered is that the Excalibur looks nice, but seems to be out of my price range. Tesoro didn't seem to get great reviews on salt water which I plan on using it in eventually. Whites looks good but all the eBay ones seem to be 600+, looks like there are still some decent deals out there on the seahunter though, may come in under budget on that.
