Looking for digital camera for beach finds. Any suggestions?

Hi all:
I would like to make clean, sharp, close-ups of beach treasure, so I guess I need a lens with macro capabilities. Any ideas about how close I need to focus for gold rings? Also, since photo posts are jpeg, I would think that a 2 to 3 megapixel camera should be adequate. I think a tripod mount would be necessary, along with a hot shoe for external flash sync. Any suggestions would be appreciated, perhaps with an example or two using your setup, along with info about your camera.
Thanks and Good Shooting
fod:)
