Looking for detector!

I would like to buy another machine just to hunt trashy sites.I would like something with decent depth. Doesn't have to be the latest and greatest. I was thinking about a silver u-max . Any suggestions?

For the money you can't beat it, very good discrimination good depth,I dial the target in on the disc knob til it knocks it out and doing very well with it, I have disc set at 5 cent range no lower and sens set at 7 for trashy areas I turn down to 4 on sens does very well.hope it helps you out

Thanks for the reply. I've never owned a tesoro. Dont know about the different models yet but I might interested when I learn some more. How much do you want for it . You can send me a PM if you want.

I've never met him, or have purchased anything from him, but I would feel completely safe with him!!! He has done a lot of testing with Tesoros and has an excellent reputation!!!!! If he says it is a good detector, it probably is!

Hi JHM
Tesoro's are great machines. My other machine is the Tejon and I'm very pleased with it. Decent depth, very good trash separation, built well, and best of all you can hunt all day without any arm fatigue. It did take awhile getting used to a single tone machine, but you'll find Tesoro has a language all its own. The Tejon seems to be geared towards the relic hunter but I find it to be a super machine for coins as well. Not to familiar with the silver u-max but being a Tesoro I'm sure it's a great machine.

Superheat said it right. For the $$ you cant hardly beat the Silver Umax. I had one of these great detectors and found enough coins and rings to buy three more detectors in a short time. Fact I found more rings ( well over 15 gold and 9 silver ) with this machine than any other detector I have used ,and I have used many. I think the last one I found with it , I posted a pic. on this forum of it. It was a 14kt. wedding band . Call it luck , or whatever but this machine is great. I ran the sens. at 8 and set the disc. just a tad bit below 5 cent. Found some deep silver coins as well with this machine. If it is there to begin with , this machine will find it. I am a firm believer in Tesoro machines , and what I like about them the most is that they dont try to hype their detectors with catchy sales ads. They dont need to.

I know that you have a Quattro and have dug some really great coins with it. I've never had what I thought was a real good detector for trash. Why did you decide on a tesoro? I like the Quattro until the targets get about 3 to 4 inches appart and I believe in my area that some of the best hunting is between the junk.

I use the Quattro in the trash all the time, but I use the smaller coil. As a matter of fact I've had the small coil on it for about a month now so all of my recent posts were found with the smaller coil in heavy trash. I'll be posting some more tonight, found with the small coil. You do lose a little depth and you really have to creep along but it seems to work fine. The main reason I decided to get a Tejon was to use in the woods, rough terrain, cellar holes, etc. I have quite a few sites that are way off the beaten path and require a pretty long hike to get to. The Quattro, though a great machine, is way to heavy to lug along. My Tejon is perfect, breaks down real easy put it in a back pack and go. And I tell you every time I use it I like it more and more. I find myself digging more targets, which seems to be a good thing because I've made quite a few great finds. If you don't have a small coil yet that would be the logical next step for the trash without spending so much on a new machine. The Q will definitely handle the trash but its like anything else it takes time. I usually back off the power a bit and creep along. Most of the coins I've found with it have had other junk in the same hole. Hope this helps.

Thanks again. I may just need to put in some more time. A lighter machine would be nice off the beaten path. Also I need some thing light for my wife to use. I'll check out those posts tonight.

I agree with you about Tesoro. I've dealt with them four or five times in the last few years and they've always backed up their units with a lifetime warranty. Like you said they don't have to hype their detectors.

By now you may have gotten a sense that a detector is a detector is a detector. Each has its own unique performance suite and it's devotees. There is always someone to tell you they got a golden pinhead at three feet deep with THEIR pet detector and others to tell you why the color of the detector makes more difference as anything else.

But reality depends on YOU and I'll keep it simple:
How well you know your instrument and it's capacity, the conditions extant where you are operating it at any given time and what actually rests there waiting to be found will determine your success. Not some magic bullet and not because someone says they did this or that, here or there.

So what about the Silver uMax? Excellent, excellent. Good choice, even more so if you can get one for good money. But, consider these, too. Try to find a Silver Sabre uMax (it has a pinpoint button that WORKS). Or a Bandido uMax. Or an Eldorado uMax (Both offer manual GB). Any of these are on the used market for similar money, they hold their value exceedingly well and offer equal or better performance to the Silver.

I love the uMax platform. They are in many ways the epitome of simple, capable detectors. You can swing them all day and with a little knob twiddling they are as good at TID as any machine out there. I carry one with me EVERYWHERE - a Vaquero, these days. But they are all the same and I've had a sample of each that I just mentioned.

Finally, if you intend to hunt in trash as part of your hunt regime, get what ever small sniper coil fits the detctor you choose. Make that a must and make it happen.

I just got a vaquero in yesterday. I hunted with it a couple of hours. Seems like a good detector. I mainly wanted a compact detector with fairly good depth and good in trashy areas. It seems to be just the right size to pack on a 4 wheeler or carry on a long hike. What coil do you use in heavy trash?

Sounds like you got the right tool for the job, J. You described it well: "good depth and good in trash." Depending on the location, when I know its trashy, I use the small 5.75" coil. The Vaq has pretty good separation with the stock coil, too, so dont be too ready to dismiss it. It's proximity that matters most of the time.

I only wish they would put selectable tone ID on the Vaq....
