Looking for detector for special purpose...

Hello,
Hid something precious years ago in an attic. The attic has been cluttered up by a pack rat. Pack rat collects alot of metal and I need to find something gold. Does anyone know of a metal detector that is discerning enough to find this gold?
Thanks,
Tom

Fisher Gold Bug Pro maybe? Thing is there is a bit of a learning curve with any machine and you will have to be able to get the coil over it. You could possibly get an experienced detectorist to show up and help you out with his equipment and save you the money.

You'll be working amongst all the nails and copper wire, not much fun but possible.

I would suggest a detector pro Pistol Probe Hand held pinpointer . It will go 4 to 5 inches for depth..You can manipulate it far better, and expect better results with EMI Etc.

A detector with even a 5" coil is going to hit everything in the attic that is metallic.........

Keep in mind no detector detects just gold while ignoring other metals. In the situation you describe even the discriminator on a detector will not help you. In a building I would use a hand held pinpointer.

Well, first if the gold is small chain necklace then you'll have a REAL problem. Now if its solid gold like a ring or maybe a gold watch then it gets a bit easier.
The larger solid gold items would narrow the target ID range down a good bit.
nails would most likely be below them, as would stables and even most screws. Plus these items wouldn't rusted like they would be in the ground (easier to discriminate)

Copper (the larger wire anyway) would read most likely above a good many solid gold items.

So, you might be able to get a detector with visual target ID and set the disc above small iron and ignore number above the Zinc penny range.
Remove the coil and lower mounting stem (use a smaller coil) and use the lower stem as a handle.
This way you can work around most of the metals used in the building construction.

You might think along the lines of a security detector, like the Whites unit. A few years ago I had a friend who had the same basic problem, and this is what he used. (older unit), but it worked great and he found what he was looking for.

Hi Rush, I would suggest seeing if you can find someone very familuar with using a Tesoro Golden Sabre II. The GS II is no magic wand, but it can do what you need if you get the coil over your precious something and whatever else Mr Rat has gathered up with it. Same thing may be said of the Tesoro Compadre. If not, there sure have been some tall tales told about those two machines. Especially about the Compadre.HH, Charlie

Hi,
Didn't have access to acomputer for a while there. Thank's to all for sharing the great advice and ideas.

Hey everybody,
The gold in the attic is in ingot form and there are about 20 pieces in a small rectangle, does that help? I can't seem to find detectorists in Chicago.
Thanks,
Tom Rush
