Looking for detector CONFUSED soon to be user.

Hi

I am really really confused.
I am looking to buy a new detector or quality used.
It needs to be easy to use.
Quality product.
Detect different metals. (Are there certain metals that detectors will not find?)
Cost around $300. If 50 dollars more will get me something awesome them I will spent it.
With good depth detection.
Is there a way to go deeper?
What do different size coils do?
Do I need to spend more money?
A seller in the southern Ontario. Burlington Hamilton Oakville area.
Information would be great. I have read way to much and I am more confused then when I started.

One more thing: Why do I have such an issue finding max depth information.

I will thank the person with great praise that can help me.

There are several questions that need to be answered.

- What type of hunting will you be doing ( just land, land and water...fresh water only or fresh and salt, any gold prospecting in the future) ?

- Do you want the unit to have a display that helps with target ID, has a depth reading, etc. ?

- Depending on the type of hunting you are going to do and where, does the unit need to have a manual or automatic ground balance as opposed to a pre-set ground balance ? This depends on your ground conditions. If the ground you will be hunting is moderate to heavily mineralized, a unit with manual or automatic ( ie, ground tracking) is a must. Thing is, units with automatic ground tracking cost more.

The reason you will not find a definitive answer on the depth question is because ground conditions play a major part in how deep a detector will find and ID good targets. In addition, lots depend on the unit and what adjustments you can make on it. Some units are bare bones with very few adjustments where others you can adjust tons of parameters on it.

Last thing....depth is just one category in a host of others ( such as target separation, recovery speed, accurate ID ( or the ability for the user to distinguish good targets from bad via the audio once he/she learns the detector), weight ( yes, some detectors are much heavier than others and this can be a factor in how long you can hunt).

If you want to spend no more than $350, there are lots of great detectors you can get new. You can also look at the classified section and get great deals on detectors worth hundreds more new but are selling for $300-350.

What therover said is true.
I must ask; is English your native language?

I am not deriding you, but the answer will determine how people answer you.

For example, Therover's reply was very clear to me, but to a non-native speaker, it would impart almost no useful information.
Where do you live / detect?

What are you looking for?
How often do you plan to detect?
Do you want an identification system?

As to metals which are not detected; it depends. In all metal or pinpoint mode, every detector will detect every metal.

If you are using discrimination, you get to determine which metals are excluded. (Useful for eliminating trash)

Almost any well known brand in your price range will be a good detector. (Garrett, Teknetics, Whites, Bounty hunter, )

An additional 50 dollars won't help you in this range, unless you run across a great used model. To step up from this price range will cost an additional 300 dollars or so.

Look at what is available at

\Shameless plug\

I have purchased every detector I have ever owned from these folks since 1984.
Great people.

Give them a call. A 10 minute conversation and they can recommend a great detector for you.

And if you don't like it, they will take it back, and send you another.

Find a club near you, and tag along. Most of us can't wait to bring another into the fold.

Keep posting here. many knowledgeable folks.

Check out the brand specific forums here. The Garrett users forum is one of the most active. (Garrett sells the most consumer grade detectors in the country)

Check out the reviews here:

See if a detector shop near you will rent one out for a day.

........JUGGERNOTT.......Being a Newbie I would steer away from the used detectors unless you can get it from a dependable dealer who will back it up with a warranty.....NEW......I would look athe Garrett ACE 250 and the Fisher F2 ..and look at some of the Whites....Also it is real important especially for a Newbie to buy a detector from a local dealer who can and would spent spend time with you in his shop and maybe even out in the field with you!!....Used detectors are great for us Veterans who grew up with them.........but I would hesitate to recommend one for a Beginner!!.....Good Luck Joe

Welcome to the hobby, since your only about an hour away from me, you have access to finding Loonies and Toonies.
You'll want a detector that can find Canadian coins, many detectors do poorly in this respect And then others do wonderfully.
There are a couple of dealers within a short drive from you.

Was going to send you a PM, since your new to this forum it is not allowed.

So I will post some info here for you:

Join this forum, many Ontario hunters post here and check out the dealers:
