Looking for coil opinions/advice

Due to my detector trading, I now have 4 coils for my Etrac: the stock coil, a 10x12 SEF, the 8" Minelab and the 6" round DD Excelerator. I use the stock coil and the Excelerator a lot. I've used the 8" a few times and have yet to even try the SEF. One of the things that I find most irritating when swinging a coil in "wild" areas is having vegetation and stubble catching on the inside of the open coils. So to avoid this, I'm pretty much limited to the 6" which just doesn't cover much ground when working these types of areas.

My questions are these: Which "closed coil" (one without spokes or openings in the center) would best help complete my 'arsenal' of coils? and, Are any of my present coils close enough in performance so that I might sell or trade one for one of these "closed coils"?

Hope those make sense. They do to me.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Either the stock pro coil or maybe a Sunray 12" coil. Both are round shaped DD coils and I read on here some were putting a Frisbee on the bottom of them and it effectively makes it a closed coil and smooth on the bottom for just your useage as described. OR some were using a few layers of heavy SERAN wrap to do the same thing seal up the gaps on the coils. There may be other things or ideas/ ways to do the same thing.

I will definitely try the Tesoro coil cover idea. I've seriously looked at the 4.5x7 coil (I love the 4x6 on my M6), but it only gives me about an inch more in coverage than the 6" coil. Anyone with experience with the 5x10 "Joey" coil?

Actually we make an optional solid skid plate available for the Sun Ray X-12 coil. It is $14.95 + S&H. Let me know if you need one.

There's a lot of coils that work really well on the E-Trac - everyone has their own opinions.

I got a 6" Excellerator Coil last year - I use it approx. 99% of the time - after using this little coil for more than 1000 hrs. - all I can say is - it's fantastic !

You can really get into the tight spots, goes over cut brush without hang ups like the open spoke coils - hits deep ( 8" & 9" Dimes) , great separation in iron, and you can swing it all day long !

Here's a link to Bryce Brown's ( the Moderator of the Findmall - Explorer Forum) field tests on various coils - a ton of great info. here !

Good luck !

i was gonna suggest thin plastic tops from large ice cream containers of the like. Use a little silicone to bond it and no more troubles

Wow guys! Thanks for the suggestions - I will definitely be doing some experimenting. Thanks also for the link to the field tests - spent a couple hours looking at it already. I love the information resources on this forum.
