Looking for club in central Illinois

Hi, I am new to metal detecting. My husband just bought me a Garrett 2500. I've just gone out a couple of times...not much luck. I am looking for a club or someone nearby to hunt with.
I have been watching videos and reading the blogs but learning how to dig is important as many times I think I have a hit only to dig and find nothing. Also do I need a pointer too? I see many people using them. Thanks for any help you can give.
 
City or County area you are in would help. Springfield had some loners and Browning has a small club. Peoria, Moline, Joliet and Bloomington also.
