Hi all i am looking to buy a gps to to keep track of ME ! I have permission to hunt an old gold mining town , i have toppo maps but i find i wast a lot of time . Old school i know but i havent got lost in the last fourty years. This place is an old town and covers about 10 sq miles in north Queensland AUS . I have an old street map and if i can log distance i can peg the streets, I have a start point at a set of steps at the church . Lots of hills and gullys so line of sight is a problem. So far i like the Garmin 62 . I am one eyed about Minelab but for gps i am open to your most valuable opinions .
Regards mark

Keep in mind no matter your choice that there is no WAAS in Oz Land. So you can eliminate that as a choice that may be a deciding factor.

Good luck

Have used many different types/brands for hunting and my job. If you are just wanting to keep your tracks or imput some goto points...most of the basic units are capable of this and are water proof/resistant to boot...such as the Garmin Etrex. It is a very tough dependable unit. If your wanting more bells & whistles...stick to Garmin, Magellan & Lowrance. Kieth

Forgot to mention....you might try posting this question on the GPS forum on this site....those guys will steer you straight. Kieth

If anyone is looking for a quick, rather inexpensive GPS solution to just get you back to the car/truck and keep you from getting lost in the woods you may want to check into the Bushnall Back Track. They sell for well under 100 bucks and they work great.

You simply hold down the store button when you are at your car and then you can even turn it off after that. When you are ready to go back to the car you turn it on and follow the arrow and it will tell you how far away you are. It's also lighted.

They are typically priced around $75 but when I bought mine years ago, I had found an online coupon for $20 off. eBay may be a good source also.

Thanks guys your ideas and experance help a lot. Bushnell has sliped under the radar big thanks mapper65 and to you all.

I've got the Backtrack and it's a heck of a unit. And after you turn it on the first time and set your starting point, when you turn it on again it only takes a few seconds to find your new location. You can also store two other waypoints besides your starting point, so if you find a hot spot you can find your way back to it.

You might also concider one that covers your area. You have to get diferent maps for diferent areas. One that is for US is not going to work in other countries. Some brands have downloads or pre-loaded SD map cards for different countries.
