Looking for a new detector.

Hi guys. First post here. Im looking for a new m.d. Ive been doing this for thirty-five years . My first detector was a Garrett Groundhog VLF-TR , I wore it out. I now own an Eagle II. Im happy with the machine but its hard to swing. My shoulder and elbow hurt so much that I havent used it in a year. These are the only two machines ive ever used and I want to get back digging .Im dwell in Missouri and hunt coins, jewelry and relics.

I was considering the Garrett AT Pro, Fisher F5, Whites M6, and the Minelab 505 but started reading reviews about Tesoros. The Vaquero is the machine Im interested in. The pros are price, warranty, and weight . The con is no meter. I can sacrifice the meter for deep targets . The main thing is digging up the goodies. Right now Im leaning toward this machine . Some input from the folks who use it would be greatly appreciated.

I read all the good reviews about the Tesoro Vaquero before I purchased one. Guess what? The excellent reviews are all true and on the money.

Just Google 'Tesoro Vaquero reviews' and you will see what users think about their Vaquero detectors. It gets 5 STARS for good reason.

I like my Teknetics Omega a lot for shallow coin shooting, but it doesn't ID well at all on deep targets. I can better tell what deep targets are, using my Vaquero.

If you want a super light, deep hitting, high quality detector that comes with a lifetime warranty at a great price, get the Tesoro Vaquero.

When looking at the pros for the vaquero you could add good depth and good target seperation. There are also some good coil choices for the machine.Although tesoro machines can look a little basic compared to the latest models from other companies, they will easily hold their own performance wise. You also mentioned the whites m6.This is a great machine also, very simple to use with excellent performance,It also has the added bonus of tone i.d.and can also be used effectively on the beach. However,it is a lot heavier than the tesoro.I've owned both machines and would find it difficult to recommend one over the other.....they are both great.

Hi, saw your question about the Vaquero. I too used a Whites, namely an MXT for a number of years. But, I had gone over to using it because I had started out with a Tesoro Cibola and while it was good little machine, I was tired of digging pretty much everything. Using the MXT I got pretty good results but I started to figure out it really wasn't any better than that Cibola at identifying targets. Most of the time I had to just dig on anything over 6 or 7 inches because it was being incorrectly identified. The hard part about getting good with a Tesoro is that in the beginning you have to be willing to dig most everything and learn the subtle differences in sound between good and trash targets. I have a Tejon I use for my relic hunting right now, but I have had a Cibola (as I mentioned) and an Eldorado (fantastic machine that just wasn't getting used but I wish I had back). I use my Tejon for relics, but I have a different machine for coinshooting (X-terra 70) .

The Vaquero is an excellent choice if you just want one machine to do it all and you need something light enough not to tear up your arm. I had to switch to lighter machines because the MXT was tearing up my shoulder and I didn't see any continued value in using a machine that I needed to ignore the TID when relic hunting. Just be prepared to feel a little like your hunting blind until you can trust that you hear the real difference in the signals, unless you were hunting primarily by sound before, then it will be a fairly easy adjustment. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the information. Im gonna pull the trigger and order one. If all the reviews are correct , why buy a more expensive machine?

Hi Hatpin, and Welcome to Tesoro ! Sounds as if you are already on the right path toward the Vaq. I watched one of my digging buddys dig the deepest small thin Silver coin I have ever seen dug with his Vaq. I have found some pretty deep ones with my Tejon, but none deep as his dig. I started on Garrett in 69, went to Tesoro in early 80s'. Best move ever! You have been around long enough to know about warrantys/ service/ etc. so be sure that you understand that Tesoro has always, from their "beginning" had the best Warranty(Lifetime) and Service of All the others! LOL, Almost want to ask "where have you been?"It is no BS and the Tesoro folks continually prove their concern for their customers.. Just keep checking Tesoro out and you will see for yourself.. Keep us posted and let us hear more from you. HH Charlie

It's the one to get. The weight is a big factor and the V is perfect(NO ARM PROBLEMS) I use mine at the beach as well. Just not on black sand.
i use a Sea Hunter Mark 11 for that.

I would think so, though you know it is always a good idea to have some "spares" in you gear bag, I am sure these guys hereabouts will be glad to make some reccomendations. I use Koss TD 81s' ,and Shadow phones with all my detectors.. The TD 81's and Shadows' are no longer made, so I can't be much help on the phones, cept to say with a new machine you have a great 'excuse " for shopping for some new phones! HH, Charlie
